Does anyone know what type oil is recommended for a Yanmar 1700 and how much with oil filter replacement?

Different folks use different brands but most agree a good diesel rated oil. I personally use Rotella 15w40 but am not saying it is the best of the best. Just good enough for this old boy.

From my readings I believe your 1700 will hold about 5 quarts with the filter. I would put in 4, crank up, circulate, let settle and check the dipstick and add as needed. Next time you'll know fer sure. :thumbsup:

Can't help with how much. I would say 4-5 qts. You could just add until it shows on the stick , crank the engine until filter fills. add a little more


Any 15w40 diesel rated oil will do

Welcome to the site! I'm just down the road from you in Scottsboro. I use Rotella 15-40 in my YM1500. It's excellent oil. You can get it at Tractor Supply or Walmart in Scottsboro or in Kimball just up the road from you. My tractor takes 4 quarts but yours probably has a slightly larger engine. You can get an owner's manual from Hoye in Texas. Their ad is at the top of the page.

The YM1700 takes 5 quarts of oil for the engine. I agree with the "diesal rated 15w-40 oil" recommendations. I have also read people recommending a synthetic 5w40 diesal rated oil that Walmart carries. I believe it is also Rotella. It will be thinner when it is cold, which will help with start-up in the winter.
