I've muffler modded a number of saws and it's not given them lots more power or made them bounce off the rev limiter in the cut.
If you're really hitting the limiter (it can be hard to tell between that and four stroking) with the bar buried, it's probably the sharpening job on the chain not the depth gauges. A properly sharpened chain either self feeds into the wood or takes minimum pressure on the saw, and pulls out good sized chips (depending on the wood of course). If you're cutting little stuff then yea it's going to hit the limiter, that's normal.
