Mower Crankshaft

Howdy. I decided to get my little mower going today, but i got it running and there was a horrible grinding noise. Looked under it and found this

i was thinking that i could get under there with an angle grinder and; without killing myself, grind 1/4 inch off or so, just because the threads dont start until 1/6 to 1/4 inch in there, then get in and put a bolt in that would hold a sleeve over the crank to hold the pulley up there. Any other ideas???

Uh, gee, how do you feel about new mower shopping? Sorry, couldn't resist.

Seriously though, It looks to me like you might be missing some parts.
The reason I say this is because of the shape of the pulley. Why the bell like extension?
More pic's might help. Is this pulley keyed? What kind of mower is this?
Maybe some of the other members have the same type and could help more.

its a wheelhorse, and its keyed. There was a PTO on ther as well, but i guess i diddnt get it on there tight enough. It ended up chewed up and i threw it out, figured i could get a pipe or something on there since i dont have a deck for it

If you don't care about the PTO, I would just get a "standard" pulley that has an allen screw to tighten onto the key. If the shaft isn't too buggered, I think that would work for you.

well, the end of the crank is pretty screwed up. I was thinking i may have to grind it off somehow, or round it down. It sticks out about 1/6 inch

I suspect the keyway is also warn so even a new key AND pulley will be hard to seat. But, its worth a try for a cast pulley. I'd also put a 'keeper' on the end to help the new pulley stay in position. If that won't keep it straight, weld on the new pulley using nickel rod and go cut the grass.
