Is there an easy way to disable the automatic blade cut-off on the 72" mower deck? If so, are there any down sides to doing this?

Need some more info. Why would you want the blades to keep spinning with the unit shut off. Most auto brake systems are there for safety. One can trick almost anything if necessary, otherwise bypass safety features.

I'm mowing a very uneven surface (roots, dips, etc.) and if the mower bounces, it often cuts off..a real pain in the a_ _! Would also like to be able to raise the mower a bit to cut some banks.

Yes. you can bypass the cutout switch with another switch which will keep the blades turning.

On my 2 year old 90" (newer style), it was real easy to bypass. Removed a small wheel under the mover cover that engages the bypass. Took only a couple of minutes to remove. Not sure if the 72" is the same.
