In my personal experience, they have always run when I encounter them. But there was a guy in NM who was killed by a lion while sitting in a hot springs. About 10 years ago.I have numerous mountain lions on the ranch.
I have never seen one that doesn't run off if startled by a human. This is where nature and man have ample space to coexist ®.
I have seen a few while walking in the woods, but generally I see them run across the road when I drive woods roads. We have cougars here. Never seen one. However - I don't wander around the property at night either.
Remember, you hear one bagpipe song you have heard them both...Bagpipes are a weapon of war. All hikers should be playing one for protection.

Bagpipes used to be classified as weapons of war
It may surprise people to learn that, until 1996, the British government considered the bagpipes to be a bona fide weapon of war.www.wearethemighty.com

I'm pretty sure that lion wasn't sticking around already. It definitely wasn't being aggressive and it was looking around for its own escape path already before the astounding noises of the harmonica were played...![]()

I just found the story comical and posted it as a humorous diversion.I'm pretty sure that lion wasn't sticking around already. It definitely wasn't being aggressive and it was looking around for its own escape path already before the astounding noises of the harmonica were played...
Still for whatever reason it reminds me of this ridiculous video:
