I am considering getting a little larger tractor with cab-air-heat.

Is there any rhyme or reason to the JD model numbers? Here are some examples. I know someone with a 4440 - it is over 100 HP. I looked up a couple others in ads. A 4410 is 35 hp and a 4310 appears to be a large garden tractor.

Where do I get my secret decoder ring? ;)

bota, the 4440 you refer too is over 20 years old, the new lineup JD has would make that something like a 7300 series. JD changes their numbers once and a while and there is overlap, it's a bit annoying to try and decipher sometimes. you're best bet is to figure out the h.p. rating you want to be at and then go to their website

To be clear, I was just using those model numbers as examples of similar numbers for very different tractors. Thanks, traprat, I will look at tractordata.

The numbering system for non-current models is very confusing. If looking at new models the numbering systems isn't as confusing as it used to be.

2000 series - small frame Compact Utility Tractor (Some people may call these "Sub-Cuts")

3000 series - Mid Frame Compact Utility Tractor

4000 series - Large frame Compact Utility Tractor

If the model # ends with '05' it is an economy model designed to meet a price point with few upgrade choices.
If it ends in '20' then it is a normal model with all types of engine and drive options.

Cabs are available in the 3000 and 4000 '20' series

Thanks turbo36. I looked at a 3000 series cab at the Stock Show last month. Very nice.

3 series are the same size as your 7800.

If you want larger, the 4 series is the one for you.

The 7800 and 3 series are comparable only in terms of HP (with respect to 3120, other 3 series have higher HP). The 3 series is a wholly different and larger frame machine (2900lbs vs 1740lbs for 7800) and higher capacity (examp: 2200 lbs 3ph lift vs 1300). If I'm not mistaken, the 7800 is more like something between the 2320 and 2520, perhaps even a 790. The 4 series will be a big jump up.
