MF165 Hydraulics (filter destroyed)

Here's some pics from my investigation as to why the 3PH is not working. I bought a filter (see pic) and could not find the one to replace....so I took off the top lid and I found a mess of metal shavings and a torn up filter holder.

The big question....what should I do to fix the problem other than cleaning out the obvious mess from the bottom of the case? Any potential damage to the pumps? Do I need a rebuild of the pumps?

I cant help you on your question, however while you have the tractor apart, attached is a modified version of one of your photos, remove the gear assy in the blue box (it is the planetary hi-lo gear) and tack weld (or have somebody do it) the joint marked by the yellow arrow. it will eventually come apart (like it did on my dads Industrial 35) and when it does you cant go anywhere. so while you already have the tractor apart is a good time to do it.

big dean has a blurb on it on his website (BIG DEAN'S TIP PAGE 2) he says:

The Two Speed or High Low​

The two speed part of the transmission or more often called the High Low shifter. It has a ring that is pressed into the hub, this ring will come out causing it not to go in to high. Some times they will not go in either gear. When this happens this ring can be drove back in & spot weld in about 3 or 4 places.

Kind of wondering if the filter retainer wasn't tight and just came unscrewed and has been doing the jig in the case for some time. Hopefully nothing has been hurt.

I would start by installing the new filter, and a new filter housing/retainer to replace the mangled one. Refill the system with the cheapest UTF you can find and flush the system out, drain and refill with your fluid of choice and another new filter.

I was thinking about this, but I don't know enough about the rest of the hydraulics path. Can the pump handle eating all of the filter and still perform?

Also, do you think this is the reason my 3PH is not working?

dunno, however once you have the new filter in, you can set the top plate back on (I suggest using 3 people and a comealong/engine hoist) you can mess with the controls and see how it works, attatched is a picture, you need to make certain that the lever that sticks up in the picture (in the blue box) is put back properly, the shop manual tells you how, Big Deans CD s supposed to as well. I would fill the tranny up to the bottom of the side hole and test the 3ph, you can reach in through the side hole (the RH one that you have off) with a screwdriver and move the 3ph up and down, ficure out what works and use that, Big Deans CD is good, the Massey shop manual is also very useful... or at least it was when we took dads tractor apart a few months back.

I'd say you found why you're 3pt isn't working! You're pump probably doesn't look to good. They can be rebuilt easy enough. You will have to measure the pump opiston diameter to get a rebuild kit. You should probably check out the lift piston & cylinder while it's apart.

Any suggestions on sources for rebuild kits?

A Massey dealer would be you're best option. They will know what you need to do the whole job & be able to give you some pointers. Most tractor places would be able to get the stuff aftermarket. I like the kits from Hy-Capacity, everything you need to rebuild the pump in one box. AGCO's Heritage parts line is the same way too. You will need to know what bore the pump cylinders are to get the right kit.
