what is the sign of a broke ring and what if fuel pump is half working

Broken or worn compression rings will cause excessive blowby fumes. Worn oil control rings will cause high oil consumption and blue smoke at exhaust. Injection pump on this model has a ****** start feature, very seldom gives any trouble other than pump may need complete resealing to correct leaks, either internal or external.

We still have the 285 my grandfather bought new in the early 80s. Its served us very well and has been a real work horse..

i need a cheap old tractor for some rough bush hogging jobs and to set out hay in out of the way places. i ran across a mf 285.i would steer away from the larger masseys ,but the smaller ones have been ok.is the 285 reliable or does the design have any major faults?
