makes me wonder why people use synthetic

now I'm reading about synthetic hydraulic oil. WOW. there is a market for anything. I dont recall seeing too many hydraulic pumps wear out because of the oil, more from running dry but I guess synthetic oil will protect against that too.



thinking about it I bet most of us run the tractor 100 hours a year unless we are farmers, rest of us its just a piece of equipment to mow, move horse pucks into neat little piles etc.....

tractor doesn't fall under what would be called severe duty or vocational use like a garbage truck or bus and even they dont usually use synthetic oil.

them old tractors ran for years and years on oil that wasn't much better than what came out of the ground.

and then the same people who pay all that money for synthetic trade the tractor in every few years.

I just dont get it.LOL.

I run 0w40 synthetic oil because I run my tractors in temps from -10 to 100 degrees. Since I only use them 100 hours a year I don't want to change the oil more than once.

I'll have you know it's not synthetic oil. It's snake oil. And have you ever tried it?

I started using synthetic snake oil about two years ago as it was getting to be such a pain to be milking the vipers for a couple of mls of snake oil only once a week. Now the puff adders and rhino vipers are much happier and I've been selling their venom to a cancer lab in the Bahamas for $5,500 a milliliter so that I can always afford all the good synthetics I want!

And as for the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." that's not a very good philosophy to have when it comes to maintenance. Just because it ain't broke now does not mean it won't break in the future. If you can prevent it from breaking or at least extend it's life expectancy you reduce your downtime and overall operational cost.

vacuum windshield wipers worked just fine.
who need a computer and the internet.
who needs cable tv.
who needs satellite radio.

Who knows, maybe it is a waste of time.

I just changed my JD 2305's Engine and Trans Oil over to Amsoil Synthetic HD Diesel Oil in the engine and their Synthetic Hydro Oil in the trans (that was fun...). I also have Mobil 1 in my Generac Generator and Honda 4 stroke Trimmer. I also put Amsoil Synthetic in my Bombardier ATV and my Briggs 7hp Pressure Washer this past weekend (Momma and the girls being away at Girl Scout Camp and me with all that free time). Maybe it's marketing that makes us buy it. Maybe it's knowing that our $13,000.00+ tractor is protected by, what we believe to be, the best lubricants we can afford. Maybe we're just gullible. Whatever it is, there's no need to ridicule people for using Synthetic or Dino. It comes down to a per$onal choice by everyone who decides to use it, or to stick with conventional oil. I also run Amsoil in my Ram 1500 and my wife's Grand Caravan, I go with extended oil changes and have seen an improvement in fuel mileage on both vehicles. I figure that me changing my own oil every 7500 with Amsoil is = in cost to having the local quick lube do it every 3000 miles. The increased fuel mileage (especially with gas at $3.29..wtf..) and protection is just iceing on the cake.

Have a beer, change your oil with whatever flavor you want, and enjoy this beautiful spring in the greatest country on God's Green Earth!

If I was running a commercial operation where my vehicles traveled 100,000's of miles a year, there might be a case for synthetic. Is synthetic better in the cold... definitely (but not an issue where I live). Does synthetic give better fuel mileage... maybe. Will synthetic make my vehicles last longer...maybe, but since I have had numerous vehicles that have turned over the speedometer several time without oil caused failures, I can't see throwing money away.

The school busses at my district travel significant miles and never once has a mechanic come to me to say ...you know, that engine/transmission/differential would have lasted longer if we had used better oil.

About 60% of failures are due to poor design, poor materials, faulty installation, 25% are due to human causes, 14.95% are due to faulty maintenance proceedures. Well, I guess the rest are due to using the manufactures recommended oil.

Maintenance, on schedule with the recommended oil will get you 99.95%

It's your money, spend it as you wish, but if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

1. There is a measurable difference in the performance of radial vs bias ply tires. If there is a difference in the bottom line performance of synthetic oil vs dino, it is small.

2. Yes, they did and still do in many applications. I haven't seen fuel injection on weedeaters, etc.

4. All of us, so we can squabble (good naturedly!) about things like synthetic oil.

5. Not me. I have satellite but there is nothing on to watch.

6. Since I have satellite tv, I'm holding out for cable radio.

Why does everyone bother with multigrade oils when the single grade worked just fine prior to the invention of multigrades after World War II?

Or for that matter, why bother with an oil filter at all?

My $95K Mercedes turbodiesel gets the same synthetic as my $40K Kubota, and so does my lawmover!

My lawnmower gets synthetic, due to the heat and low cost of going to synthetic. My 18 yr old Subaru still gets conventional dino oil. poor mistreated subie with over 200K on it....

I think the real macho thing to do is just run straight non-detergent recycled single grade with no filter and change the oil every 10 hours, and bring the used oil back to the recycle center for more!
