Reminds me of a similar setup i saw.. Guy sank a 3" sleave (pipe) into the ground.. put a spring in there, then mounted his mailbox to a pipe that also slid mostly over the exposed portion of the spring. spring was darn stiff.. but if you put 30-50# weight on it.. it would deflect and allow the mailbox top to lean over/away.. etc. After the aluminum mailbox got the baseball bat treatment a few times, he used a piece of 8" pipe section to make a new mailbox top with a simple flapper door that hinged fromthe top. Mailbox is virtually baseball bat proof.. yet will flex and give in case it is run over.. and won't break the arm of the stupid kid driving around baseball batting them..
