Reminds me of a similar setup i saw.. Guy sank a 3" sleave (pipe) into the ground.. put a spring in there, then mounted his mailbox to a pipe that also slid mostly over the exposed portion of the spring. spring was darn stiff.. but if you put 30-50# weight on it.. it would deflect and allow the mailbox top to lean over/away.. etc. After the aluminum mailbox got the baseball bat treatment a few times, he used a piece of 8" pipe section to make a new mailbox top with a simple flapper door that hinged fromthe top. Mailbox is virtually baseball bat proof.. yet will flex and give in case it is run over.. and won't break the arm of the stupid kid driving around baseball batting them..

Had this same problem when I lived in NH. I solved it by using a box post fitted w/ a heavy coil spring at the bottom. So, IIRC, it was a long tube *mail box end) w/ a heavy coil spring welded to that w/ a shorter portion welded to that. The shorter portion was the end put in concrete. Never had a single problem w/ this set up even when they pushed 6'+ berms against it.

Plenty of reflectors: yep, brightest thing around at night!!

Dig back the snow so it is easy to see: Yep, otherwise they will not deliver.

Put the post back a ways and keep the box fairly high: Yep 9 years it worked.

Town plow moves from 6 wheel dump to 10 wheel dump: Yep and warp nine seems to be the new rule...... Mailbox and many neighbor's boxes all lost... no direct contact just a fast moving wall of snow...

I paint the mailbox the post and everything black.
No reflectors or bright objects on or near mail box.
Idea is to make it blend in with the dark so it's less visible to vandals.

Used to live next door to a plumber. His solution was threaded pipe and elbows, as shown, loose enough to turn moderately easily. Moreover, when the snow banks got further out into the road, it could be extended so the carrier could still reach...he got his mail when we had to go to the PO.

Hiya,

Went down to get the mail today, had to go back to the barn to get a pair of tin snips to cut the box open to get the mail out.
