I'm one instance away from burning my manual.

Transmission dipstick:
I too, had a problem determining hydraulic fluid level in the tranny. I never could determine if the fluid was under the view glass, or over it, mainly because the clean fluid is so clear. So I made my own dip-stick. Is it perfect? No, but it get's me within 1/4 inch of the level of the fluid. Close enough for gov't work.

The mahindra oil is purple so it is fairly easy to see in the sight glass but the factory fluid was difficult to see. I have heard of guys adding food coloring to the fluid to make it easier to see.

I sent an old coworker a picture of the new tractor when I first purchased it since we'd had conversations about wanting a tractor with a FEL. A different coworker from the past called me today - He had heard I had a mahindra. He has a chance to buy one at a good price, he wanted my opinion. "How much time to do you have?.."

I ended up summarizing the main points (documentation is worse than having none at all, dealership issues, cannot source a direct replacement for $65 Mahindra fuel filter, gross accumulation of metal particles in hydraulic/transmission housing, having to remove FEL brace to clean transmission screen, lack of a decent filter on hydraulic/transmission system). I sent him a link to this thread so he could review.

In the tractor's defense, had I just taken the machine in for its 50 hour service I would have never known about the insane amount of metal shavings in the transmission, would be unaware that the manual sucks (incorrect oil listing for transmission, referencing a dipstick that does not exist), and would not know what a PIA it is to clean the hydraulic screen. The tractor works great despite all the issues I've had to work through in this thread.

Anyway, if you read this far, Hi Ron! :)

[edit] Just to add - I was in line at NAPA getting hoses made over the weekend and got to talk to a guy that maintains an entire fleet of car haulers. He has a spin-on hydraulic filter on every single piece of equipment he services. I didn't ask if he added them or if they came on the systems stock. The NAPA guy making the hoses said that he sells in-line filters regularly to guys adding a filter to the return line. As soon as I get the new valve installed I plan to add in a spin-on filter to the tank return. I've got all the parts picked out except for the hydraulic fittings. I just need to pick where I want it and make it happen.

How much 80w does the front axle take?

Also - are these 1/2" SAE flat face couplings?

So that question about the front axle oil was a trick question. As per the manual I would expect it to take 2.17gal. I bought 3 gallons of gear oil and drained it.

Less than a gallon came out. I poured most of a gallon in and it was overfilled. Not to mention the diagram in the manual shows the fill location on the wrong side of the tractor.

Lastly, I was cleaning the rad screen and this was loose, just bouncing around.

Not sure what happened here..

Lastly, the listing for the grapple said it used 1/2" flat face couplings. What I bought as flat face couplings is not what is pictured. I think those are AG couplings? Help would be appreciated.

Those in the picture are ag couplers and they should have letters and numbers on them to identify the maker and size.

I really appreciate the reply.

The ad says the RK5 comes with flat face couplings so that is what I bought. You confirm what I thought (I'm just learning about the different coupling types). I'm going to call MTL and see if they will make it right. I actually called them when I was at NAPA to ensure I got the right male/female parts to go with the attachment. I ended up having to text as they were closed but I got a reply that I needed male and female.

From the ebay ad:

Fortunately I've already had two fitting debacles already and am not even aggravated about the fitting mixup. A couple more days waiting to play with my grapple won't kill me..
