Lost an hour to DST

I don’t want it. It’s just that it’s the main reason for it in my area
It’s comical. Everyone has a supposed reason for DST. Thirty years ago my grandmother always said that DST was to benefit the golfers so they could play later after work.

Yep, I'm near Lexington, KY and in June it doesn't get dark outside until 10:00 p.m. because we're on the western edge of the zone. I love it. I can work an 8 hour shift and then go home and have 7 more hours to do work around the property.

I went to college in Bowling Green, KY which is on the eastern edge of the central time zone. Friggin' miserable. Got dark at a little after 4:00 p.m. by Christmas. Yuck. Made it seem like it was ALWAYS dark.

In summer the wife and I like to get off work around 5:00, drive up to harbor cities along Lake Michigan, have dinner at a nice restaurant, or even fast food, then walk the beaches and piers to watch the sunsets. Most times we have to wait an hour so before it sets. Then we drive home in the twilight. It's finally dark when we get home around 11:00.

I grew up on Lake Ontario...it was like living at the edge of a fresh water sea.

With spectacular sun sets, as you're aware Mr. MossRoads.

If you don't have a clock, is there DST?

Asking for a hay farmer.
The problem is, employers do have clocks.

Many dairy farmers were also school bus drivers, delivery truck drivers, a quarry truck drivers and had to be at his driving job by 7am. That sets a time constraint.
If it’s dark at 7am in October and rest of fall and winter, it’s harder to milk cows or do outdoor chores before his day work job.
With the clocks set back in October, the daylight now begins at 6am instead of 7am. That gives him an extra hour of daylight, before his 7am job starts, to get the cows milked or chores done.

Its an outdated tradition that needs to end because theres far fewer people living their lives that way anymore.

In the congressional acts that established DST and also in state legislatures, I doubt there’s any reference to dairy farmers. That wasn’t the intended purpose; it was to save energy. And my grandma was wrong- it wasn’t intended to help golfers have more hours to play after work. See this overview:

I dont think it was the primary reason either, but as others and myself have stated, it was supported by small time farmers trying to get chores done before their “day job”. IMO, many were vocal about keeping it around.

We’re talking about 2 different things, (1) is what is the reason for DST? and (2) Who supports it?

No doubt. And many people today also like it just because they have more summer daylight hours after work to enjoy the outdoors. I sure do enjoy long twilight in the summer. I guess if I were retired it wouldn’t matter.

You and I are talking about 2 different things. You are talking about “spring forward” setting clocks forward so the time on the clock is later when the sun goes down, but its now darker early in the morning.
I am talking about the “fall back” setting of the clocks back so the clock reads an earlier hour when the sun comes up. THAT helps farmers who needed to get up and milk cows or do chores before their daytime job.
