Bought a small farm that came with an old Oliver 69hp tractor (1965 I think). Got it running good but was way too much tractor for what I need. Sold it and bought a MF gc1725mb. Tractor is fine (should have went a little bigger but hindsight). Looking to put a brush hog. Am looking at 48" but conflicting opinions as to if my Massey will run it or if it will destroy my tractor. Counting on the wisdom of crowds here. Thanks.

Size of Brush Hog is not major concern, you can probably run up to 60 inch, but how you use/abuse it will be how you hurt tractor... Tractor Data dot com states you have full 24.5 HP at PTO (claimed)... General consensus is it take about 5 hp per foot of "mower" width....

Your tractor is rated at 24.5 PTO horsepower which is actually enough for a five foot brush hog. The only concern with the four foot unit would be the weight of the implement versus the weight of the tractor - kind of a tail wagging the dog thing. I owned a Massey GC2400, essentially the same tractor as yours. I ran a 48" cutter with no issues. It will handle it just fine. Use the speed of the tractor to determine what you can cut. If the RPMs are dropping, slow down. It doesn't matter what tractor, that is the case. Get the 48" and go cut some $hit.

IMO, you just as well trade-up now. You will not be satisfied with either the tractor nor the results of using a 4' brush cutter.
That SCUT might power a 4' brush cutter IF you go slow enough; use your lowest gearing possible.
That MF is for a hobby farm, less than 5 acres, and not already overgrown.

I suspect the tractor-data horse power chart is a typo in this instance. They are usually pretty accurate.

Definitely a typo. 17.5 hp for the pto would be more accurate.

what your cutting, along w the height and thickness is very important. You also have to consider the incline(s) and speed.
