every time I read this I wonder when my 27yr old quarter horse is going to go down.. and where....

my horse that went down was 24 or 25, i dont know why he dropped. All i could think of was a very nasty infection. The way he was bloated in such a short time.

You "can" butcher the beef yourself, but it's ten times more work than a little old 150 pound deer.

As far as dead animal transport is concerned, either for disposal or butchering, the recommendation is to always securely cover it. This prevents picking up a lot of dirt (which can seriously ruin meat), cuts down on bugs, and prevents offending the weaker, but more politically active members of society.

I know up here without going through the expense of setting up a butcher shop/slaughterhouse myself, I have to get someone else to do it if I want to sell the meat/give it away. If it is for me and the family I can do whatever I like as I assume the risks. So I transport live animals to the shop, and come pick up frozen/vac packed meat.

I had to burry another horse on Fri just before leaving for a camping trip. They never go down when it's convienent.

Luckily the vet coaxed it to the stall door before putting it down. Initially it was in the back of the stall with no way to get a piece of equipment to it. We were looking at using the skidsteer with a 20' truss setting pole to reach in and drag it out. What a pain that would be.

I can dig the hole in 45 minutes to 1 hour, not a hard job, but it requires respect and patience when the family is around. I've done two at this farm and they still have two old horses left. I've marked the last two graves with rocks so that they all can be burried in the same area.

I've done lots of dogs, usually I don't charge for those. Hard to charge a grieving family.:ashamed:

Most places won't do a dead animal anyway. Some people aren't always honest about when the animal died/was put down.

One of my first jobs I worked for a family excavation co. Grandpa had enough of one of the cows getting out, so he shot it and called the grandson to bring the JD 70 excavator up. I thought we were going to burry it. But noooooo, we hung it from the excavator bucket in the front yard (3 in the afternoon, Friday, fall leaf season) with cars riding by looking at foliage. ROFLMAO, some of the looks from the out of staters on vacation were priceless. Bunch of Maine ridgerunners skinning and butchering a cow on the front lawn of a farmhouse 20' from the road.
