Far as the auto hoods go. Even the Pros who do code welding work like them. Doing code work, any arc strike marks outside the weld zone will get you fired. So with the new auto hoods, why take that chance?!

Well, I know I sure was in for surprise when I first used one.. Man what a difference.

when i first learned to stick weld i was sticking every time i tried to start an arc. someone told me to hold the stinger loose grip, like really loose grip the rod would swing if you moved your shoulder. then strike it like a match. worked for me. just had too tight a grip.
