Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

I am familiar with camloc bearings. I just don't understand why this one keeps coming loose. I can get replacement bearings through my day job.

If you have a bearlng similar to this, and it's locked in place and won't stay, I'd try a different brand!

Not that type. IIRC, bearing is Fafnir or maybe NSK eccentric lock collar type bearing

S/N tag is preseng and legible. I already picked up the operator manual. The drve shaft bearing is a cam lock type with a single set screw on the collar. The set screw is tight to the shaft. The collar came loose from the cam on the bearing. Perhaps I secured the cam in the wrong direction. Will resecure so that the forward rotation tightens it. I didnt think that the bearing drag would be enough to loosen the cam. May just need a new bearing.

I think the space between shaft and bearing is too big, you can feel if it is too easy to install the bearing onto the shaft, it is a question related to production processing accuracy. Mostly this Mexico factory ignore something details when they produce it.

To avoid it slip, I suggest you to drill a small hole(no need too deep) on the shaft end, then the set screw of the bearing could go a little into this hole on the shaft.

And there are some different type of set screw, I don't know what type your set screw is, you can check some other type.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the setscrew and collar is not coming loose from the shaft. The eccentric end of the beariing is uncoupling from the collar.

Sounds like the shaft is moving side to side, or the end plates are moving. Good luck and hope you figure it out.

So, I’ve read this thread several times over the last few years every time I think I’m going to buy myself a flail, but now I think I’m really ready.
I know I’m going 60” for use on my B2620, but can’t decide, Caroni , Woodmax or Titan. It will be used for pasture/ field mowing a couple or 3 acres and I only cut it 5-6 times a year. I think any of the 3 are up to the task just can’t decide to have one shipped or I can pick up the TM1500 local.

I'd like to know if any of you guys with flail mowers are using yours with one of the various Quick Hitches on the market. I have one from HF but so far, have not messed with it. From what I read anything with a PTO shaft creates some issues so like to hear from those using them with a flail and if its worth the trouble.

I ran my old Ford 917 & new Peruzzo SuperBull with various QHes. I've had Northern Tool, Harbor Freight & at least 1 other make of QH. They are all cheap in most meanings of the word, but hold up fine & are more or less the same quality. I have yet to break one, even with the 1,800lbs Peruzzo shifted all the way out & catching on 2" brush. A couple needed grinding on the hooks to loosen them up enough to properly fit. All needed an extension on the back of the top hook to fit some gear.

I rebuilt my PHD to fit a QH (requires a hydraulic toplink) & that had PTO issues unless you did the toplink extension before dropping the 3pt. I've cut a couple plastic PTO shaft guards on other impliment catching them on the QH. But I can't remember which offhand. Generally I think that happened when the hydraulic toplink was fully retracted. Not as likely to happen if you use the stock toplink & dont have it at extreme ends of its length.

Fallon. I have top and tilt on my 2501; extending the top hook on my HF unit is easily done, just so my top cylinder has enough length to reach out the extra 4 inches was one concern, the other being the PTO shaft hitting the crossbar as some have mentioned. When mowing, I drop the 3 point all the way down putting all the weight on the rear roller and right now the cylinder is not an issue length wise so the mower floats across the field. One concern I have is hitting the PTO shaft against the QH crossbar but having yet to mount my QH that remains to be seen. Maybe won't be able to raise the mower to full height meaning I need to be very careful or put a stop bolt on the lifting mechanism? I could remove the cylinder and use the manual top link for a little more clearance if needed but really like having the cylinder for everything; works very well with the Land Plane and Box blade.
