Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

25 HP PTO + 3,500lbs of ballasted tractor * 7' flail got me this. In heavy grass over the front wheels I had to back off a bit. But in sparser grass i'd run pedal down in low range just fine. In some areas I'd run in the middle of medium range. I'd guess maybe 2mph or so in the heavy stuff pictured.

I prefer wide & slow to skinny & fast. Going slow means less bouncing rattling my spine & machine.

In general the flail goes a little slower, due to re-processing material several times. But it also gives a superior cut with a smooth blanket of trimmings rather than clumps.

My new L4060 (mid 30s PTO HP) will pull that flail up to 20% faster due to more power & an air ride seat. But I still have to back off a hair in the dense 2'+ stuff or I start bogging the engine.

In any tall stuff I end up leaving uncut tire tracks. They show up within a day or so as the grass that got ran over by the tractor before the mower stands back up. Not really a problem in the less dense stuff.

Hello Fallon,

It's nice to see your spread and the mule and no snow. Is your mowing assistant camera shy???

No, just bored & easily distracted.

Nice being able to let her wander nearby while I'm mowing. I never did that with when I had the 60" rotary. Travel speed was higher with the rotary, but at best it did the same acres per hour as the 7' flail rolling a bit slower. Sold the nearly new rotary & kept the worn out beat to **** flail. Might replace the rotary with cheap heavy duty 6' for heavy brush if I can find a great deal. But not in a rush.

About your L3240;

turf or R4 tires?
liquid ballast in rear tires??
front end loader or suitcase weights in front?
How much time do you have to mow?

R4 Tire with ballast in the rears.
LA 624 FEL.
Time is relative i suppose, going slower, but adding 2ft of cutting path to each lap seems like it might be a wash if it's thick. So my next question is the TM1900BSC from agri supply comes with the "B" cutter and drum and moving down to the TL1500FSC - 59" changes the head to the "F" cutter which i under stand is twice as dense cutter wise but more of a finishing knife. So who much sapling capacity do i lose? Durability from the TM to the TL. Thanks for all the advise.

What makes you think you cannot purchase a 48" with the B or P rotor??????????

ANY of the four rotor styles can be used on the entire line of flail mowers and cutting widths. DO NOT assume that rotor types are restricted to a specific model and or width in any case.

If you do not plan on mowing more often then a 48 inch units with the A or P rotor will be your only real option. The A rotor will let you recut the first pass clippings and back over saplings shred them up once by backing and then driving forward over them again while mowing.

Your only other real option is going to a municipal auction and finding a rear mount Alamo (HIIIISSSSS SPIIIITTT) and out bidding everyone and I mean everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, and leaving it on the ground at all times.
The municipal surplus Alamo flail mower will also let you back over scrub and saplings too.................

Going to be joining the flail mower club here shortly. Ordered a 53" Caroni TM1300 from local store here which will be matched to our Ford 1500. Thought about going 5' but at 19HP it seemed like it was pushing it.

Should should up in about a week or so, can't wait.

Based on the Agri Supply web sight only listing those two models and a followup phone call confirming the same. I did see all the models in a product brochure, just can't find anyone who sells them. Please point me in the right direction.

Again;

They can order what you want it will just take you a little longer to get it that is all.
Decide which model you want and send me a pm through the board and I will chat with Rodney.

I was just trying to simplify things for your needs. If you want you can order the smaller unit
directly from a Caroni Dealer in England and expect to wait 6-8 weeks for it to come from England.

If you want you can look at Iowa Farm equipment lines of flail mowers-Maschio and Peruzzo and you will have the same high standards and they will ship them to you.

After talking binge reading this entire thread and talking to folks at several dealers of the Italian flails around the country, including everythingattachments.com, iowafarmequipment.com, agrisupply.com i finally pulled the trigger on a Del Morino 6' T73 from tractortoolsdirect.com.
It shipped same day and I should have it by the end of the week at my local freight depot. I'll update when i get it dirty.
