Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

I have a Woodmaxx FM62-H for my B2910. It has 22 hp pto. I have hammers and Y blades. Hammer's can bog the engine down where the Y's did not. 52" should be about right for your 17.5 hp pto. Ibex says the TX52 is for a 20 to 40 hp tractor. Does not state that is pto hp. [edited to remove link, (not high enough post count)]Woodmaxx states there 54" flail mower[/URL] is for 18 to 40 pto hp.

Thanks for the reply. The 2601 is spec'ed at 25.6Hp, PTO at 19.5Hp. Don't think I want to go much wider than 54" as I'd like to be able to maneuver around the trees. I'm leaning towards the TX52 or similar. Maybe smaller and get hammers?

Pretty country out in Western my. Spent many weekends in the finger lakes for track events at Watkins Glen. Pretty hilly there, so be careful. I too have about 10-12 acres that gets mowed, I have a 9' flail and still have to slow down in the real thick green grass in my valley. That is with 70 hp. Going slower and wider is definitely better than narrower and faster. My kidneys thank me when I go slower.

Also, a 4wd tractor is much less maneuverable than a two wheel drive. Though it is nice occasionally to have the 4wd. I could easily live without it, and would love a tighter turning radius.

Just a note that 4 wheel drive is not always less maneuverable. My Kubota will turn much sharper then my old 2 wheel drive John Deere. Really depend on the tractors being compared. I was really surprised by this when I first got the Kubota.

I miss read the brochure. 19.5 will help with hammers.

I suppose you are right. I did get to use a 30hp Kubota over the summer and it did turn around in a much smaller space, but not as tight as my Ferguson, and they are roughly the same size. The Kubota felt light and didn't have as much traction as I expected due to the light weight. I had to keep the 5' bish hog on the back of I wanted to lift anything. Even IBC totes, empty, I could not back up a hill. The tires were loaded too. I wonder if same brand, same size tractors are available in 2 and 4wd?

Sorry, rambling! They would have to increase the front tire size for sure.

Ended up pulling the trigger on a TX52. Talked to the sales guy he was quite helpful. Told me I should stick with the 'Y' blades for right now and see how they do. He said he'd give me a good deal on hammers if I wanted to swap them out later. $1K off sale right now so it seemed like the right thing to do.

Fingers crossed!

How slow do you go?

How slow do you go?

Not sure of the speed as tractor meter has been broken for a long time. But I usually mow in either 3rd gear mid-range, or 4th gear low-range, with the engine at PTO rpm range. Which is somewhere around 5 -6 mph. I will go to first gear mid range in the thick stuff. Around 2mph. I have turned my sapling, blackberry infested pastures into grass for haying just by mowing. Seems grass is the only thing that likes to be mowed. We don't spray anything here. We are clean and sustainable, (I hate the term organic now), beyond organic.

Just remember, you can take half a cut of you are marginal on hp.

Narrowleafs (grass) grows from the bottom of the plant. Broadleafs ("weeds" & lots of other stuff) grows from the top of the plant. So when you mow the grass isn't phased, but you destroy the more active parts of the weeds. Less competition means the grass does better overall. And once it has a lead the grass shades & chokes out weeds a fair bit.

Yup, I am aware, I re-read what I wrote, and it does seem like I didn't know. I guess I was trying to be funny and get people to stop using roundup. Thanks though.
