Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

Owner is reclaiming the hill pasture adjacent to me with a forestry chipper mounted to the front of a tracked compact loader. Basically a flail mower on steroids. I had never seen a front mounted flail until today. It might be useful on my hill farm.

I would like to try a front mounted flail mower, that way all the grass is standing when the mower knives engage the grass.

I d dislike it when the pressed down grass from the tires springs up a day later after cutting.

EXACTLY!

I have a 60" front mounted finish mower and a 48" front mounted brush cutter on my FEL arms on my Power Trac PT425. Neither are flail. Finish mower is 3 blades. Brush cutter is one hub with two blades. I've had this setup for 18 years. The finish mower is rear discharge. Everything blows under the machine. Nothing comes up in my face. It's very nice to mow the grass before you run it over and flatten it with the tractor tires.

The brush cutter destroys everything in its path before you drive over it. I've taken it through 14' high weeds that no one in their right mind would drive a similarly sized conventional tractor forwards through to get their brush cutter to it. They'd back into it.

Don't let anyone tell you front mount is bad. It's not, and they probably have never operated one to form such an opinion.

Most of the Peruzzo bull videos show the mower in front of the machine. Mine is a 3pt mount on the same machine. The roller is on the back of the flail in both configs & the gearbox can be driven front or the back depending on mounting.

When I had my Boomer 50, I had a Ford 917 that I beat my place into submission with. Rocks didn't stand a chance. Used it for 2 years, turned around and sold it for exactly what I paid for it.

Now that I'm getting another tractor, I might get another flail for the places that like to grow rocks. Keep the wear and tear on my zero turn down.

If you liked a 917 with regular blades, you will love one with the fine cut blades. The rocks around here were far harder on the regular blades than on the fine cut blades much to my surprise and delight. Plus, it did a far nicer, more even cutting job.

One of the most rugged pieces of gear I've ever seen. You can probably read about it 200 pages back in this thread but mine had some weird drum on it that had more than the documented number of stations for a course cut, but less than a fine cut. I put all new hardware on it when I got it, then chewed through rocks, roots, stumps, fence posts...you name it for 2 years...and can count on one hand the blade losses I had.

Probably just grab whatever I can find used locally. Know I saw an Alamo earlier in the week that looked decent. I've got 25 PTO HP so probably need to find a 5 footer if I can....

I have seen many Alamos at Gov auction. They too look very heavy and sold for dirt cheap, but I had no use for them. If push comes to shove, you can even use a 917 like a Harley Rake. My Dad did that, all proud how he was levelling and conditioning the ground, until he smoked the belts off the thing. I wan't too impressed!
