Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

I'm not sure what the two vertical pieces are for on the back that are for an adjustable pin connection. Gauge wheels maybe?
------------------------

The vertical breckets on the back seem to be just like the ones on the bigger Alamos's...gauge wheels...not sure why you would need them since the roller pretty much takes care of that.

You stole that mower.

You want to invest in the 2 gauge wheels to make it easier to turn and prevent gouging and mower nose diving by dips in the sod. -----------

I've never understood the need/role of guide wheels on flail mowers. The rear roller, not guide wheels, maintains the proper elevation for scalp free mowing. Some say the wheels help in turns but my personal experience with a flail that doesn't have guide wheels is that I simply don't have any problem with turns. Why do only some flails have this option?

I am just guessing but I only noticed them on the bigger/heavier mowers maybe it does help with tight turns if part of the weight is carried by the gauge wheels.:confused3:

Shame on Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I forgot that the roller on these units is non adjustable
from what I remember now which required the gauge
wheels to control the mower height.

They mounted these beautiful flail mowers on a lot of
mules that were 35 HP or less-the MF135 for example
for state highway departments and they covered a lot of
ground with them as they mowed more often than they
do now and the rear wheels kept the mower stable
when backing at the same time when mowing as well.

It is a real shame that they do not invest in tracked robotic
flail mowers that can be run much more economically
than the current set ups.

The Wessex Flail mowers sold in Europe can be equipped with two or four corner
mounted gauge wheels and a hitch wheel as the flail mower height on most mowers sold across the pond have a stationary rear roller and those units are typically towed with 4 wheel drive truck or heavy 4 wheel drive 4 wheeler.

I am a new member to Flail Nation. I was able to figure out from old posts that I have an old K48 Mott flail mower. I also found Flail Master from old posts and was able to replace both blown out cutter shaft bearings and all the old battered blades. Ready to hook this up to my 35 HP tractor and want to make sure that it should handle 1K RPMs. Can someone confirm this or set me straight? Thanks

Isn't the rear PTO on the LK3504 a standard 540 rpm?? I've never heard of a rear PTO on a Kioti that was 1K.

And, by the way, welcome to both TBN and Flail Mower Nation.

Thanks for the welcome. My LK3504 has both 540 and 1K on the PTO. I thought 1K would cut much better, but I don't want to ruin my new parts on this old Mott.
