Hi all,

I just scored an hydraulic cylinder for one of the items on my "tractor bucket list" : a wood splitter.

So far, so good, reasonable price but I have 2 questions/need advice:

  1. What is the purpose of the box mounted on the cylinder ? I can find on the net that it is some kind of flow control valve. Does it needs to stay on the cylinder to make a splitter ?
  2. The pin at the bottom is stuck, the deformed it already by hammering on it so there is a bulge on the end, have to grind that down. But what is the best way to get it loose ? WD40 ? Heat ? But will heat damage the inner bushing ?
Remember I am an hydraulic noob.

Counterbalance valve. No its not needed for a log splitter.

If you need to apply heat, extend the rod all the way. That will move the seals away from the heat.

WD40 isnt great for a penetrating lube. And since there is no plastic.......and possible heat involved so who cares about the paint, Would be a good application for Acetone/ATF mix. Mix it 50/50.

But yes, grind down the mushroomed part. If it was me, I would grind it all down flush with the bore. And probably spot drill it a little so a punch or whatever wont move around when being hammered on. Then take your pick.....hydrauluc press would be nice. BFH and punch, Air hammer, etc.

Thanks for the tips, greatly appreciated.

The ATF/acetone mix is something I will try for sure.
