Landscape Pulverizer

Carver's web page discusses a Landscape Pulverizer as often replacing a "box blade, scraper blade, aerator, culti-packer, spiker, rake, and tiller to 2"." I'm going to be trying to turn about 1 acre of pasture into a lawn including a gravel driveway - a pulverizer sounds like the perfect attachment for the job. Will a pulverizer do all that Carver's web page says it will do? It sounds like a pulverizer will be a lot more functional than a box blade, is it easier to use? Thanks for your feedback.

It is listed under the attachment options for a specific tractor - the tractor model I was looking at is the B2710 (it's pretty far down the page).

A soil pulverizer is very useful for final leveling, smoothing, and reducing clod size in preparation for seeding or installing sod. You often see them being used by landscapers working around new house construction where the soil has been rough graded by a bulldozer or large loader-backhoe tractor. In such conditions there is very little vegetation or root structure--just cloddy, roughly shaped soil--and the pulverizer works well there. I have never tried to use mine in established pasture or turf, but I think that there might be problems with the pulverizer teeth just filling up with vegetation. You would probably need to moldboard plow and then maybe disk the pasture to bury and cut up the vegetation before using the pulverizer to achieve the level, fine particle seedbed you want for sowing grass seed or installing sod.

Rent a tiller instead. It leaves a very good surface to plant on. Then drag after seeding with a piece of chain link fence or a harrow.

After a field is plowed, you will wish for a long time for a way to get rid of all the clods that are securely reinforced with weeds and grass! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Saw one at Carver yesterday. Basically it's got a row of about 5000 teeth held in place by U-bolts (OK I like to exaggerate). But I can't imagine ever changing the height of them one at a time! That's followed by a blade, followed by an aerator type drum hanging off the rear.
