I am looking at a L4701, MX5400 and the JD4052M. The L4701 best fits my need for getting around on my property, between trees, etc. I do see the L4701 is lighter (3300 Lbs) vs the others. Is it possible to add rear wheel weights? how much weight? are they of benefit? Thanks, John

Wheel weights will aid traction but likely rut lawn.

As the L4701 and MX5400 are close in price, most here favor the MX5400. For your own information calculate $$/pound and $$/horsepower for both tractors. As you are in Georgia where Kubota has several manufacturing plants, parts should be readily available for both models.

An L4701 will be a big improvement over your current JD 790 in capability.

Thanks for the thoughts. The MX5400 is definitely heaver and only costs a few thousand more.
I like the agility of the 790, but it really seems as if the extra hp and weight would be more useful.
Does anyone have thoughts on the JD 4052M as a comparison?

Yes, cast iron wheel weights can be added to the 4701. I much prefer cast iron than liquid ballast for multiple reasons and have 3 weights per side on my L6060.

The weights on my 6060 are 103 Lbs. each (+bolts). I expect that the 4701 uses the same weights.

I both loaded my tires AND added wheel weights to my MX. They are really light in the rear.

Tractors need proper 3pt ballast to use the loader regardless of wheel weights. The L3200/L3301/L3901 is not safe to lift much with unless you have 3pt ballast AND wheel ballast. I nearly rolled my L3200 even with both lifting hay bales that were as much as the hydraulics would lift.

I've tested the new L4060HSTC with just loaded tires & it's pretty stable. I still wont run it without 3pt ballast though. Not completely clear how the L4060 matches up ballance wise despite being similar ballpark weight wise to the MX.

All tractors have a weak spot. My old L3200 was lack of weight especially in back. The Grand is hydraulics. Beef one up & the weak spot goes somewhere else. With weak hydraulics you dont roll the tractor when you find the weak spot like yiu do with ballast though.
