1999 Kubota L3710 GST
Hello list,

I'm starting to look around for new tires for my Kubota L3710.
I had a few questions that I would like to throw out here on the list and get some feed back on.
I currently have Firestone turf tires on the tractor now, that's what was on the tractor when I bought it. I would like to go to R-4s. I've looked in my operator's manual and have a pretty good idea of what sizes I need for the front and back. What I'd like to ask the list is,
1. What does Kubota L series tractors come with "stock" for R-4 tires, manufacturer, brand, size?
2. Anyone out there have any preference to a manufacturer? Right now I'm thinking Firestone, Titan, and Goodyear.
3. How many ply should I get? I do a lot of loader work and forestry work, brush and log removal out of the woods.

The tires I have now are beat and worn. The fronts keep popping of the rims when doing loader work and the rears are starting to crack around the rim.
Any suggestions or help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I can't offer much help but can get the thread started anyway.

You might consider getting whatever front tires you end up with foam filled. I did that a couple years ago with my B2910 and have been very happy with them.

On the back, more plys in my mind makes a tougher tire. Since you probably don't want a puncture in the woods, you may want to go with more plys. Doing so would, I think, equate to having tougher sidewalls. I was kind of shocked to see that my B2910 R4s were only 4 ply...still, never punctured one, although I did flat on the front the second day I had the tractor.

Well...at least this is a start... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Jim, yur dealer should be able to give you the sizes and makes that Kubota used as well the proper rim sizes.

Rear tires- 17.5L 24 Firestone 6 Ply

Front tires- 10-16.5 Titan 6 Ply

Not sure if you're rims will work-I vaguely remember dealer saying needed rims and tires to go to R4's

These tires are vastly bigger than the stock AG tire setup-same as L48-they greatly improve performance of tractor-well worth it /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks Art,
That was my next step this week. I thought I'd get some input from you guys first. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif TBN is the best source of real life information from people that have been there and done that, if you know what I mean. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That's what I'm hoping for.
I do plan on getting new rims and filling the rear tires with Calcium.
Thanks for the tire sizes and input.

I had looked into filling my tires with foam a few years ago when I first got the tractor and found it was pretty expensive$$
Thanks for getting things going though. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Give RimGuard serious consideration. Non toxic and does not corrode rims.

Jim where I live (No. Calif.) I was told to put just water in tires. Dealer said rims were made to hold water-and were lifetime warranty against rust thru- although never seen that in writing /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Andy, Thanks for the tip on Rim Gaurd. Do you use it? I see your in my neck of the woods so who sells it around southern New England? I checked out their web page and it sounds good but how much does it cost$$

Thanks,

Jim

You don't have to worry about freezing temps in Northern Calif? Here in New England I couldn't just use water as it would freeze in winter. Thanks for the tip on the rim warranty though I will check on that when I get my new ones.

I had my B2710 rear R4's filled with Rim Guard by Chappell in Milford NH for $175. You should have no problem finding a dealer who sells Rim Guard in Mass or NH.

FWIW, my Kubota M6800 owners guide recommends CaCl as the ballast solution of choice.

For any kind of work where you might puncture a tire, you can't beat the solid foam. I ordered the tires on my L3710 filled when I bought the tractor. I've never regretted it. It was money well spent. I've been in more situations than I can count where something sharp was lurking in the brush. I can go anywhere on the property and know that I'm not going to get stuck with a flat tire. Because of the terrain, any such problem will have to be handled by me, myself, and I.

It also makes a difference in the woods. The foam filled tires add close to 1000# to the tractors weight. That gives you a lot more stability for loader work and makes the little tractor perform like a larger one.

The only problem is don't ever let one of those tires get away from you or lay down. It'll take at least two guys or more depending on strength to get the tire upright again. The dealer dropped one over and it took three men to pick it up. If you're buying an all new tire/rim setup, you might be able to get the foam at cost. It's worth checking.

Standard R1's for the 3710 are 8.3x16 (F) and 13.6x24 (R). The R4 sizes are what you noted, so at the very least, the fronts have different diameters. With the rear R4's being nearly 4 inches wider than R1's, you would figure they would have to have different rims also.

Regarding brands, there was a thread a couple of years ago about a Michelin XM industrial tire that had the large profile and heavy carcass of an R4 with the aggressive lug pattern of an R1. Sounded like a great combination, but I recall they were also pretty expensive.

The XM's have a central rib which runs around the center of the tire with the lugs extending out to the perimeter. It makes a good high speed tire (40 mph). As you said they are expensive. I priced a set of 12.5x20s for my Case. The total would have been $2,000+. The other problem was availability. I would have had to wait for a production run. None of the distributors had any.

It's unfortunate but some makes do change the lead lag ratio so it is important to keep everything in perspective. You might find that they are resonable to buy as a set from the dealer. They come painted matching color and you don't have to worry about financing a mismatch.
