well I live 60 miles west of Nashville and we were victims of the flood on may 2 , My L3430( 250 hours) and my ZD323( 100 hours ) got wet in the barn , the engine on the 323 under water , the engine on the tractor up to the exhaust but not under ,starter alternator covered and under water

i got the tractor started and pulled the zd 323 up to high ground and took the pressure washer to both cleaning them good , tractor seemed fine no problems at all , zd 323 , won't turn over , a knowledgeable guy told me to take the injectors out and turn it over , get the water out and it 'll be fine , did that and damned if he wasn't right

anyway , about a week ago tractor started turning over slow , battery fine , bypassed the alternator and starter and it cranked over by shorting at the starter , so me and the dealer said starter relay , got it less than 10 bucks , and took forever to find out where it goes m,, have to take the back of the dash cover off , anyway replaced and still no luck , change the battery , nothing , i notice the relay next to the starter relay is hot and clicking , i call dealer , he says the relays on both sides of the starter relay are identical , one is for glow plugs , the other he doesn't know ?? anyway 80 bucks ea for those and i say hold up , take the starter and alternator to auto zone , cant test the alternator , put the starter in , no good , kubota is proud of that one , they want 800 bucks , i ask the guy rebuild ?and the guy at autozone looks at it taps it a couple time s and retest , cranks , 2 time s then no more , takes it back out taps again and crud comes out , starts 5 times in a row , so i says can i take it apart and clean it out ?, he says you can try , but its tricky , so I'm faced with 800 dollars or take it to a guy to rebuild , I take it apart , clean it out , blow it out , some moisture , some crud and getting the brushes back in are a B***ch but i finally got it , take and put it back together and everything back in tractor , starts right off , BUT doesn't turn off , ***** !!! , so i look , ponder scratch my head, scratch my arse and go back to the relays and switch them around and bingo ,

so so far 3 days later starts right up ,

i got about 5 hours on each and am checking the fluids looking for water , so far none , but I'm gonna change them all just to be sure , i kept googling to get answers and most of them came from here so thank you for your forums

Unfortunatly after being under water the switches will all be wet internally as well as the starter. The flood waters will leave silt in starters(you have found that) as well as everywhere else that was under water.

I hope you have changed he fluids in both machines! They might need it again yet!

So when taking the starter part on the 3430 also do the mower!

They only need to be taken apart and cleaned! That is unless you persist in using them full of silt!

You are right on the dis-assembly and cleaning. Not getting the water and dirt out will be an expensive mistake IMHO. I am surprised starters and alternators aren't toast. I bought a utv that was in a similar flood...not completely submerged. It was torn completely down, fluids replaced, and electrics cleaned before it was ever started. Everything has been fine many hours later except the alternator and starter. The alternator went out then the starter. I changed fluids and filters again about two weeks after I bought it, even though they were just changed. The price was set in anticipation of all that so it was no big deal. I would not have purchased it if it had been started and run before tear down. Just me I guess.

if there is water in any of the oils it will go milky and if any in the motor drain the oil fill DON'T put the oil filter on roll the tractor over till clean oil comes out put on the filter NO ONE thinks to remember the oil pump holds oil and water :D this saves time and 2 or 3 oil changes  hope this helps
