A live PTO can power the transmission backwards due to inerta & keep driving the machine forward with the clutch in. Quite a problem with a gear machine when the inertia of a brush hog keeps you going into a ditch with the clutch in.

Transmission driven PTO can "power the transmission backwards" with the clutch disengaged but live PTO and independent PTO cannot.

You're not the first, won't be the last. Many contemporary tractors with transmission PTO have a sprag (internal ORC) that make them much safer if not convenient.

Maybe some can.
I know my previous tractor was a JD 850 (older model with the single stage clutch ) transmission driven PTO and it never did that.
And no it didn't have an external overrun clutch, must have been internal.

Yup.

Some have an internal ORC.
Those that don't...simply get an external one. Old N series fords are perfect examples. Need to get something external anyway to adapt the 1-1/8 pto shaft up to 1-3/8...unless someone already spent the $150 and swapped the whole shaft.
