We have always had one or two nesting in our long gravel driveway. Not a problem. They have always nested in a place out of the way. Not this year. She built her nest in the most high traffic area of our driveway. So we roped this off. These are pretty spunky little birds. She has attacked my tractor twice in the last two days, ran off a pitt bull, doberman, a horse, and my wife on a riding mower. This seems to work. We are all afraid. She had two eggs on her nest yesterday and three today.

They are really neat birds. They aren't that common in my neck of the woods, but one nested in the yard of my farm summer before last. I am hoping for a return. It's amazing how quickly their young hit the ground running.

We have one going in our driveway too. The bird really puts on a show when we get near it. I almost ran over the nest on the tractor yesterday, but the bird got my attention and I veered away. There are 4 eggs in the nest. Seems like a vulnerable place for a nest.

They're poor planners, but great defenders. . . . kinda like when your boss has a bad idea he won't give up.:laughing:

I usually spray a circle around their nests with ground paint. Lets me know where it is but doesn't appear to attract the attention of predators. I don't mind their nesting but I could do without all the drama everytime I walk in the area as they are usually right near my shop and the garden.

Years ago, I worked in an area surveying that was a little soft, not quite swampy, that was more or less a wide open field. There must have been 20 of them nested in this area. There was always one of them flopping around. I was aware of them and tried not to step on a nest.

We had them on a printing plant roof. The pea gravel attacted them?? We laid a old v-belt over the nest for a marker.. I admire their 'cripple dance" when approached?
