Optical illusion. I would have swore the white one opening was smaller. But measured both same.

I was ready to open it up too.

No ported saws are not needed. Just buy next size up.

But then again you just never know when they come in handy.

IMHO if you dont have a issues with fines on stock air filter running the o-ring like I do. Not worth it to me.

Echo 490 that I took on trade years ago. It was hack ported no squish or base cut. Running stock air filter with oring.

Then running echo parts Joe showed using years back.
Total cost $30 shipped to me for the 3 oem echo parts.

I don’t have issues with fines for over 2 years now just by running the o-ring in stock.

Retuned for next try. Noticed it had picked up rpm's before last test session with switch. The 490 500 dont like higher rpm's the way 501 4910 can compared to those.

Just trying the $30 set up for fun on my 490.
Might try on one of my higher revving 501’s later.
I ended up fattening it up a 1/4 turn on H side to bring it down some.
10.75 Down, 11 across. Was 1/4"+ down cut shorter then test day before.

But did get both on video.

Since I added the more open exhaust (did not remove the muffler insides yet) and retuned it, it feels more robust and bogs less. I never had fines problems in the exhaust so far.
That air filter looks cool, but I would be afraid of damaging it in the field.

Some guys have fines get by the intake side where air filter mount. The o-ring I showed stops that. Also can use some grease along with or maybe by itself.

Ya I thought about that too. I would only use it bucking.

If you wanted something like this for all uses, you could always by that A2D design one the guy sells. 3D printed with wedge so you can run top cover. But looks like a humpback camel.
You can get it with or without the wedge holes in it. Just not worth it to me, unless you had a really hot ported one to make use of that flow.

I would have prob had that all torn off dropping those 5 maples in March.

Once when stuck and ran and when I got it knocked out of my hands when I got my ribs broke.

I'll be leaving my 2 501's stock set up though. I still havent even went in and opened the intake up yet on either of those. Small gains there shown on Joe's dyno.

Video's

The stock set up was 11" down 11 across.

With the other echo set. I ended up fattening it up a 1/4 turn on H side to bring it down some.
