I have a JD47 Backhoe Attachment and am wondering if there is a joystick upgrade for the hydraulic controls (2 Levers) or is there an aftermarket upgrade available for this unit ?? Anybody see anything ??? Thanks !!

Wait, does yours NOT have two levers? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My year old 47 does...

Yes, the hoe controls are 2 levers and I'm wondering if there is a joystick upgrade available thru JD or whoever ?? Seen anything available ???

What would you be expecting a upgrade to do for you? I'm confused as to what the upgrade would entail. In other words, what would you improve with an upgrade?

Cliff...
Sorry, maybe I should have gave more detail; what I'm talking about is a single lever control for the hydraulics on the JD47 Hoe which would be the same or similar to the system used on excavators (large & mini). This would be easier to operate and control the hoe functions because instead of operating 2 separate levers, you would have the one lever or "joystick" like the mini excavators. I've rented a mini excavator before and found the joystick system a dream to operate and was thinking that maybe JD or an aftermarket company might have this system available to change the 2 lever controls to a single multifunction unit. Seen anything ??
Thanks

This is EASY!! Go use a 4 stick backhoe for a while! Then the 2 stick one will seem so great...

Have you used the 47 much? At first it seemed klutzy. but it quickly got better at interfacing to me... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mike....
I've only got 58 hours on the tractor which probably about 10 using the 47 Hoe so I'm far from experienced for sure. Now, a 4 stick would definetly be a challenge. Have you used a joystick setup & what do you think ?? Have you seen anything regarding a retrofit ??
Thanks

Mike.....
Further to my previous post; maybe I've got a minor problem with my unit because what I'm struggling with is the right control which controls the outboard arm & bucket is nice & smooth, but the left control which controls the inboard arm is "quick" and & I struggle with scooping smoothly toward me because of the difference in control "reaction". If you've got any suggestions I'd appreciate hearing them.

Eric,
What RPM is the tractor running at when you are using the backhoe. I have found that running at 1500 to 1800 RPM works best for me. The hoe is not as jerky than when running at higher RPMs.

I didn't know they used a single lever control on excavators. I can't guess how you would control 4 functions in two directions with a single lever in an intuitive way, but maybe I'm not thinking out of the box.

Yup, it takes time for that hoe to learn how to work right! At first, it wants to bang into its mount real hard, is jerky and just plain goes in the wrong directions at weird rates of speed. But if you stick at it; it will learn to behave well. Talk nicely to it and do experiment with the engine speed, as it like to hear just the right tune to have the best work attitude.

I am fortunate to be training mine with the help of my wife, She teaches it a new trick, and will show me, and then I learn it a different one and show her.

I really think that hoes are actually eager learners... They sure do like to work!!

Chris....
I've been running engine about 1600 to 1800. I found that with a higher rpm the controls were real "jerky" and hard to control and at a lower rpm, it just didn't seem to have the power I required. As per Mike's post, maybe it's just a matter of time but when I use it, I start with a smile and end up frustrated because with the left control I'm beating the tractor to death. Any other suggestions - Welcome

Mike...
You hit the nail on the head here, Man. Oh Boy, it seems like I'm not gonna have any stops left and the mounts beat to pieces if I don't soon get a handle on it.
Thanks

Have to agree with the above, I grew up with a four lever Ford at our house, the first time I used a two lever, I thought it was the greatest thing ever invented. As for your question, the "joystick" you see on bigger equipment is electrical, running solenoids that operate the valves, if you think your toys are expensive now,! add that setup and you'd have to live in your tractor. Most full size tractor-loader-backhoes don't even have this setup due to the cost. It doen't hurt quite as bad on a several hundred thousand dollar machine. You are slowly starting to see the smaller Japan built construction equipment with them, but for hoes your size, I don't think it will ever happen. When I was learning as a kid, my Dad wouldn't throttle up the tractor very high, he made us learn that the teeth will do the work if you point the bucket right and let them cut. Running at a high rpm is good, but, as you are learning, you tend to us only one lever at a time, and with the engine wound up it's much harder to keep from slamming the hoe around. (swing was always the worst!) I would learn to work on smooth and fluid motions first, then more on working on all the actions at once, which takes more oil and slows and smooths things out a little. Next time you see a true operator running a hoe of any type, stop for a moment and watch how fluid his motions are, very little wasted motion and lots of work happening. You see less and less of this as all the young "hotdogs" are starting to run equipment.

Thanks for post; I thought the joystick system was hydraulic not electronic & if that's the case I can very easily see why that system is not on the CUT's. I know some good hoe operators and I'm tellin ya, they sure make it look easy for sure. I'll keep pickin away at it and use your advise on getting "smooth" one at a time. Thanks again

Thanks joe! you are always so good to jump in when I beg fer help! I really didn't know anything about the electronic or 4 stick. My 4 year old sure got worked up when we saw a case setup like that, he was asking those guts how to work it... got his face all screwed up and told the how much better e liked using a two stick. Sure had those guys wondering

The tell me 8-10 more weeks if I'm lucky (not sure about that!) The fingers now bend and I can make a fist. Working on building it back up, sure am tired of typing with eight fingers !
