John Deere 950
I have a John Deere 950 tractor. I went out the other day to use it , turned the key and got nothing. I pulled the starter out of the bell housing with the wiring still attached, turned the key and got nothing. The solenoid was kicking the gear in and out. I assumed it was my starter (it may be original). Put in the new starter and got nothing. My battery tests good, the engine turns by hand. I put a 2 amp charger on it, turned the key and got a buzzing noise from the voltage regulator, nothing else. I'm pretty sure I changed the regulator about 3 years ago. Does the regulator sound like the problem, or is there a way to test further before buying another regulator? Thanks in advance for any help.

How did you test the battery? Checking voltage is not adequate. You should try a load test. You could then try removing the cables. Clean battery terminals and cable connectors. Inspect connectors for corrosion. Reconnect and tighten securely. If you can move them they're not tight. Follow the ground wire to the chassis. Remove, clean, and tighten. After these actions are complete check back and we'll decide what to try next.

Common problem: The 2 contacts within the solenoid may be burned, melted, worn, or fubar'd. New parts and easy to change. don't need the plunger.

Update I had only done a voltage test on the battery, it actually seemed high, @13 volts when standing. I checked the date code and found that I must have put a fairly new battery in several years ago, not a new battery. The date was 5/21 In FL if something won't start and the battery is over 3 years old, it's pretty much a gimmie. I got a new battery put it in, tightened everything and all seems fine. I had replaced the regulator and alternator a couple years back because my charging system wasn't working. A friend told me that on some tractors, the charge warning light is necessary to start the field in the alternator. Pulled the dash apart, changed all 3 indicator bulbs and replaced. Temp warning is on (probably a sending unit) oil pressure light goes off after starting, as it should. Charge indicator light never even flashes. If all it means is I have to put a maintainer on it, I'm ok with that. I just wish I could get another system working properly. Thanks for the advice.
