We have a John Deere 870 with mid mount mower and the lever to engage mower recently will not stay engaged. To engage it now we have to shut the engine off and when you start it the mower will be engaged but lever will jump out of gear. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

You should look under the console and on the mower deck for grass clippings
as there will be plenty of them affecting the ability of the mowers mid power take off
to work correctly.
If you have time you should remove the mower deck and spend some time underneath
the mule with a work light to remove all the chaff from mowing as it will get into everything.
Your going to need a leaf blower and a garden hose with hot water to wash underneath the tractor.
