Sometimes a functioning gear set is (Good Enough)

I have an 85 inch tiller that lost the ring gear retaining nut, it took out 3 teeth on the pinion. Couldn't find a replacement and just cleaned out the broken pieces , reassembled it and have put quite a few hours on it with no problems so far.

Bought a well used raced and abused Yamaha YZ465 dirt bike that had several damaged teeth on the primary drive, ran that bike hard for years and never had a problem or could even tell it had damaged gears.

Sometimes good enough really is good enough.

When I couldn't find replacement gears for the tiller I did do a little Youtube surfing and there were a few ring/pinion repair vids
generally by brazing and then taking some time with a grinder and then rolling the gear around each other until the engagement was smooth.

Good Luck with whatever path you take to get the tractor functional again.

Agreed! In this case it definitely applies... it runs smooth and doesn't catch.. unlike my pto gears.. which I will be shaving down to smooth them out.. found out why the pto was noisy. It got hit by the lift arm. Luckily it didnt do much other than deform the gear tooth a little.

Still waiting on parts from Illinois but that isn't stopping me from getting things ready for when they do arrive. So today I took the time to de-burr the PTO gear and got it running smooth again. I then cleaned up the cover and put a coat of black on it and reinstalled it onto the back of the tractor. I took the rock-shaft cover off and inspected it for damage. Surprisingly I didn't see any... But with the cover off you can see how vulnerable the rear diff is if anything breaks... I also decided to start cleaning up the rear fenders. They are covered in hard water deposits. In order to remove them I used #000 steel wool and then some plastic polish. Its been a good day. I just wished my parts arrived today like they said they would. Included are pictures from what I did today.

How did it all come out? Do you have a functional tractor?
