John Deere 2305 Compact Tractor Transmission and rear PTO failure

Any updates on this? I am discussing options with my local JD dealer regarding the 3rd PTO failure in as many years on our 2006. One under warranty and this will be the second one out of my pocket. This one happened while cutting grass.

I have gained a lot of support from other John Deere 2305 owners and have been asked by many what is the status of the class action suit. My goal for now is to gather a list of names of 2305 owners who have had similar problems and lack of support from John Deere. Once this list reaches a large enough size I plan to take this case to an attorney for review. This is going to be a long drawn out process, which is always the case with anything judicial, but I plan to stay vigilant and lead this case for the sake of John Deere's consumers.

I'm from Australia , I own a 2305 and the rear pto went on me as well. Cost $2500 for parts only. Have photo of new housing and old housing. 2006 model only 264 hours on it.







John Deere knew there was problem with that area , rectified it but failed to recall the tractors.

I'm giving john deere a hard time see what they got to offer.

Wow, i never knew this was an issue.

I have had great responses from corporations to negative posts in several forums. I am saddened that it needs lawyers to get this solved.

I"m sure these kind of posts hurt the used market too. I am surprised that the dealers stuck with used machines dont make a stink about this.

I bought a 2305 in September 2007, I just traded it in with 350 hours for a 2320. I had no idea about this. I never had a problem. I had the 54" MMM and used it alot, The only rear PTO implement I had was a fertilizer spreader and it was only used this last year. I wonder if mine had the revised case. I hope everything works out for you guys. This is unacceptable from John Deere, they have a lot of nerve. I can tell when ever I call with problems. They act like they cant be bothered.

With the market so competitive, and the online owner communities so strong, I am shocked how they get away doing nothing here.

Very sad state of affairs.

Yamaha had a similar issue with their 225 hp outboards. $6000 dollar repair on units from 2002 to 2004. They changed the part, but offer no help to the consumers.

Customer service has been going down the tubes now for a while. It is very discouraging to spend your hard earned money on a piece of equipment that you hold in such a high regard and then get ignored by the big corporations, shame on them!

Please keep us updated on the status of the suit, and if they reimburse you for all the repairs.

JD should also give your dealer the 18% back that you were discounted.

Is there a way to visually tell if a 2210 has the newer or revised transmission housing. Im looking at a 2004 with about 250 hrs. but i dont know when they started using the redesigned housing.

Especially since they have re-engineered it to make it heavier. That's like an admission of deficiency. They should at least supply the parts at cost in that case.

Just so us guys know the heavier case did not completely solve the issue, I broke mine. No help from JD. I had a hard time but I upgraded to 2320 for pto use.

JD updates the case in late 2007 to 2008 in the 2305, not the 2210.

My dealer when they found the damage. Part of the estimate was a new updated case, then they reali?ed my tractor was already the newer case.
As far as the 2210......well assuming that Deere didn't an updated case for the 2210.:confused2:

Sorry to hear about Jd not covering the problems. I have had numerous problems with every deere I have ever owned! Check out the early 4000 tractors. They cast the front axels 30 degrees off camber. The front gears ground to pepper! It cost me a.bundle to get fixed. 2 yr old tractor. deere would not stand behind their mistake. So no green for me!

I purchased a JD 2305 tractor in 2006-07. In 2010 i fenced my entire propert7(1.5 a)and made good use of a TSC post hole digger.
Spring of 2011 i attached the PHD to make two holes for a leanto on my shed. The PHD turned fine after hookup. But as soon as I touched down to dig, it stopped turning. I tryed this several times. I then checked to see if one of the shear pins had snapped, but no. I also checked to see if the drive bar on the PHD had disconnected or stripped out, but no. I then disconnected and looked at the rear PTO which looked fine. But when I grabbed the PTO shaft I could wiggle it. I knew even with my limited knowledge that this was not good. I then took it to my local dealer where I had purchased the machine. It took several weeks for them to call me back(common). I was totally shocked when I was told the not only was the PTO case cracked and broken, that because I turned it on this way, the gears and interior parts were destroyed. My dismay did not end there, as I soon discovered that it would cost $6700 to fix one component on my $12000 base price tractor. Although my homeowners covered the repair, I could not wait for the months they told me it would take to complete it. I bought a SCAG zero turn, banked the insurance money, and use the loader and drag blade on the 2305. No mention was ever made by JD regarding the already known issues with this PTO case.
It is unfortunate that JD would take this stance of avoidance. I know that I will never purchase another John Deere product, which a lot to say as I sincerely loved the 2305 and constantly bragged about its capabilities.

On another note, has anyone found another fix for these PTO units?
Or does anyone know how to find a junked, burned, or otherwise broken or wrecked 2305 that I could possibly pirate the entire PTO unit off of?

Jim,
the best advice I could give you to repair your tractor is get a complete parts list from your dealer. Shop online to get the best price you can for the parts. Than talk to local farmers to find a good mechanic that works for himself and doesn't charge Deere dealer shop rates. Most of the repair estimate is labour. I think the dealer quoted me 40- 50 hours. There is an updated case, you had the old less beefy case. The update was sometime late in 2007. Believe me, the new case can also break. The case alone was quoted at near $2000.

I've bought to more deeres since. A z465 for mowing, 2320 for tilling and everything else. The 2305 has the bh on pretty much permanently.

I gotta say all the newer Deere stuff doesnt impress me, I looked at 4300 used, 4310's with E-hydro (electronic this that and the other!!) with the dumb lag time on the peddle, and the aluminum rear housings are BAD, BAD, BAD. I bought a low hour 955, simple tried and true. Also, bought a used Bobcat 763 to abuse on my construction type work. I could not believe how durable my old 755 was, I used it like a DOG for loader work. **** of a unit.

This exact issue just happened this past weekend to my 2305 using a rototiller. Took the tractor to my dealer Filmore Equipment and got the news that parts alone were going to cost $6100.00 and that was with no labor.....yet. Out of the kindness of their hearts they offered to do a web search for parts.
After reading these post I must say I am not very impressed with John Deere and have owned John Deere my whole life while I was farming.
