I have two JD310SE backhoes, one has about 3000hrs the other has about 4000hrs, both smoke under compression. No smoke under load. Both started to smoke at about 2000hrs. Traveling down hill under compression the tractors smoke but when you get back on the throttle the smoke clears up. Does not affect preformance of engine. Is this a problem with the 310SE's? My dealer says no. Has anyone had this problem and did you repair it? Thanks Ed

Probably a compression or injection timing deficiency. I would need more serious symptoms before I cared much; unless you need deductible expense. If they start and run well, don't use engine oil or dump fuel into the crankcase, why worry?

I have a gas 650 Ford that does the same thing for about 7 years now. It's coming from my valve gides, high manifold vacuum. On your diesel no vacuum, so I would agree, that it could be in the injection pump, or timing. How is the oil consumption? can you smell any fuel in the oil? Is the oil washed out with fuel?

I not sure what engine you have, but probably a 3 cylinder, but anyway 3 or 4 cylinder the injection pump is still delivering fuel when going down hill, or compression mode as you call it, and the smoke is probably unburnt fuel. Washes down into crankcase, so change oil on time.
