JD FTX38?

I want to know whatever I can about the John Deere FTX38. There's one for sale locally and I'm going to go look at it.

A Google search didn't bring up anything on that model, but the guy told me on the phone that it's the right model number. It's a 17 hp.

What is it worth? Is it a good mower? Is it one of those box store types or is it a little better model?

Correction. The guy just called me back to tell me the paper had it wrong. It's an STX 38.

Same story... tell me whatever you know about it. Please.

A late 80's to early 1990's equal to today's JD100's, but sold at dealers before the box store era began. Typical power was a 12.5-13 HP Kohler Command, they were light duty lawn tractors. Some upgraded STX's might have had Kawasaki power, could be the case if it is indeed a 17 HP one. These typically fetch $200-400 on the used market today if in good shape.

I went and looked at it. The guy worked at the John Deere dealership. It had a brand new 17 Hp B&S engine and a brand new shiny hood complete with decals. He was asking $590 and wasn't going to budge off that a penny.

I didn't buy it. It's probably worth that much to someone, but not me. It was really nice though. With that 17Hp engine, that baby will cut some serious grass. It had a real tight turning radius too. The biggest drawback to me was that there was no way to attach a snow blower or anything like that. It looks like it was built to mow lawn well and nothing else.
