JD 790 PTO Adjustment

I looked through the pdf and only saw the cover over the openings in the casting on p206. Refers to them as "clutch port" or "vents". No reference that I could find for adjusting the clutch plates through those port holes. I stand corrected on what I believed to be possible.

Well crud! šŸ˜ž That means I will not be able to use it until it's fixed. I even tried with the PTO engaged before starting and tractor won't start as a safety feature - which is good really.

I could probably tackle the repair myself, but will just need to save to have it fixed. No one happen to know the average cost on that?

Have you tried starting the engine a second before engaging the PTO? With practice the engine will start and the PTO grinding will be minimal.

I'd find the safety switch and disconnect it. Then, as I did with the neighbors' 430 2-cyl, got it started with PTO engaged and ran it for a while and it finally came loose, after which it worked fine. Maybe that is all that is really wrong here.
But cannot tell for sure, based on what has been reported.

I've had to do it for years. One hand on the PTO lever, turn the key with the other hand a second before lifting the PTO lever. If you time it right the engine is just starting to fire as you engage the PTO. The funny thing is that disengaging the PTO by depressing the clutch stops the PTO from turning.
