JD 755 Project

Sure Tex, but I was thinking LB has no tractor experience - so removing the loader was something he could forget until after he is able drive the tractor forward & back. FEL removal is easy if you can drive the tractor. (Which he can't right now.)

Plus we don't have to go through the "How do I remove the FEL" posts yet. ;)

I only have seen two of those cheaper downloadable pdf manuals and unfortunately both were missing crucial sections. One was MF, one was JD.

In LB's case here, he can't afford to be missing any info. That's why I suggest the genuine manual.
Regards,

Those early John Deere 755s etc were painted with a money saving one step no primer process. Eventually the paint would lose adhesion and peel off panels in fairly big pieces but mostly after it was out of warranty. I fought with Deere to replace a number of panels like fenders, side panels etc that had that affliction. They and dealer helped out. You end up with fairly big areas of rust.

Sometimes how much fun a project is depends on how fast you need to get it done. Obviously an important consideration with those loose pieces in the case is knowing exactly what is in there so you know you retrieved them all. My 755 with 1050 hrs has been very reliable. I have always lubed and changed fluids/filters more frequently than specified. I'll be doing their major service on it shortly that includes trans axle fluid and all filters. Good luck.

@ Yourkie: That's nice to know about the rust issue as I can literally peel off big size pieces without any issues. Later on down the road, I plan to use rattle can paint on it and see how it does.

@ Spanner and texasranger. I'm going to try a few more times to retrieve the bolt and washer because taking off the transaxle will be pretty time consuming. I do have the technical manual for it and thank you for the sections to look up. I'll be sure to read them over and over again.

@ beenthere: I appreciate the cow magnet link, never heard of such a thing. I'm wondering if I could feed my magnet tool up through the drain plug or put a compressor in there and try to blow the pieces up?

I'll post back next week and let you guys know if I have any success with retrieving the bolts.

Would it work to lift the front of the tractor up to help the bolts roll the the back of the trany? Would that make it easier for you?

Just wanted to give a quick update, I was able to get out the bolt head tonight! I'm hoping I'll be able to get the washer later on this week.

Another update on the 755, I was able to fish out the washer from the trans-axle a couple of Tuesdays ago! Needless to say, I was over joyed by this and ordered the updated hydro shaft for the transmission. Here's a picture of the washer and screw head, I might have to frame them.

The new parts came in today and I worked on cleaning up the output drive. Here's a few pics of it. I do have some questions regarding it, there's a red piece of rope/twine around the one of the screws and a metal tag on another screw with some "Made in the USA" markings. Does anyone have any idea if this is normal? I'm attaching some pics for more detail.

Lastly, the house I bought some years ago was a foreclosure and in the shed was a 5 gallon bucket of Hy-Gard, unopened. I brought in my house this week and was wondering if it would be okay to use in my tractor. Or should I just buy some new fluid to be on the safe side? Here's a pic of it.

And thank you for all the feedback so far, its been much appreciated.

If it's still sealed I'd use it. It's a far more controlled environment than the oil in your tractor sees if you parked it outside for a few years. Others may disagree.

Well done on retrieving your washer.
The oil will be ok. Just don't tip the last dregs into the trans. Oddly enough, there's usually a bit of sediment in the bottom and you may have some condensation precipitate - but that's unlikely. (Don't shake the bucket around.)
Remove the red string. Leave tags if not attached by red string.

I hate to rain on some of your good fortune but... If I remember correctly your tractor uses low viscosity Hi-Guard. If that's the case you might be able to find a dealer that will trade you.

Thank you for the replies, I'm going to go ahead and order some low viscosity Hy-Gard. I read the technical manual and it does state to use the low viscosity. My plan is to install the new hydro shaft this week and work on installing the drive in the tractor this weekend.

Just a few more questions, the technical manual states to use a lift of some sorts to drop the hydro drive in and work on re-installing it. I don't a lift of any sorts so I'm not sure the best way forward. Any suggestions? And is there a fill port to put the Hy-Gard in? I'll go back and look at the tech manual but I don't recall seeing it.
