Tractor
john deere 6400
Hi all, this is my first post on this site as a new member. I have jd 6400 cab tractor with starting problems.

The tractor can be sitting for periods of 2 to 3 weeks and can start first time, if I turn it off or stall it cold or warm, it may not start at all, sometimes it will try to turn over, but doesn't seem to have enough power, or nothing at all.

We have tried jump starting from another vehicle/ battery, disconnecting all leads and cleaning them for a better connection.

We have also changed the battery with the same result, could it be the starter relay or starter motor.

The tractor is located on an isolated farm in new south wales, Australia so getting a mechanic there would be costly, because I only go up on weekends.

Any suggestions

Regards Tony

Not enough info for me to help, but want to know.. will letting it sit for another 2-3 week period result in it starting again?

Thankyou for replying, I'm going up this weekend, my neighbour helped me get it started when I stalled it last time, hes pretty knowledgable and wasn't sure why it was doing this 😯

Letting it sit for longer periods seem to help, for example leaving overnight seems to help, but it can start after turning off but this is rare. Prpobably have to start with basics and test starter relay, if I can find it, I haven't had the tractor for long so will find it first .... lol 😂

Your tractors starting problem sounds similar to older JD tractors such as 3020/4020's that CC hyd pump was trying to build pressure during starting procedure putting extra load on starter. I see JD once offered a hyd pump destroking kit for 6400 which is NLA. The part RE67354 is no longer available. Contact your local John Deere dealer for other options.

Might look into that tx jim, thanks for replying, I'll look at the electrical things first such as starter relay etc, just because it located so far from civilisation etc ... lol. 😂 And it would be an easier fix if it was electrical

My next guess would be dragging armature in starter from worn bushings.

That sounds like a real possibility, I think its electrical as its 18 years old with 8,500 hours on it.

Thanks again tx jim, youv'e been very helpful, much appreciated, bwboy1

Hi tbrooks, it runs fine when started, I can use it normally from slashing to light earth works, usually starts first time from cold but once turned off at key or stalled, 99 0/0 (percent) it will try and turnover or there is nothing at all or a clicking from the starter solenoid, it is that random and varied 😣
