I have a 1975 jd 4430 diesel tractor that is new to me. After start up, I notice smoke coming out of a tube that is located between the frame and the battery box on the right side of the tractor. The tube is pointed straight down. Is this some a breather tube for crankcase oil? Thanks, Carr

Yes as other poster stated tube you refer to is engine crankcase breather tube. I've seen engines have blow-by without using a lot of oil between oil changes. Colder ambient temps can cause more blow-by to appear. Have you checked PH of engine coolant?

Thanks for the replies. Tx Jim, I have not checked the ph of the engine coolant. I will check it out. Thank you.

My 2030 (which does not get used hard), has a lot of blowby, not smoke, just air that blows hard enough to stir up the dust on the ground. When used hard, the blowby goes away for a while.
