A 2009 JD 4320 tractor I looked at yesterday has err code 4 on the display. The code description is related to engine speed-No signal at engine speed input. I would like to know if anyone has experienced this. I have been trying to locate a diagnostic flow chart for it. Ideally, I would have the manual, but I didn't buy the tractor yet so I don't want to get the manual. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. To me this sounds like a crank/rpm/flywheel sensor, but I cannot find the sensor or what they call it when looking at the parts diagrams.

I have a PDF of the tech manual you're welcome to. If wanted, shoot me your email

Interesting diagnostics.
this is what is says for err 4.-- Check the 325A, 325B, and 325C
Grn wires and connections for short or open circuit.

Theory of Operation directly from the manual.
"Pulsed current flows from the “P” terminal of the alternator
to the display panel (X8 connector, terminal F) through the
325C and 325B Grn wires.
When current is pulsed through the 325C and 325B Grn
wires, the tachometer reads this input and displays the
engine rpm speed.
Additionally, on eHydro machines, the 325A Grn wire
supplies input pulses to the A2 drive controller to indicate to
the controller the engine speed."

Ok, so engine speed comes from the alternator. So, maybe and open or shorted wire, or an alternator fault. Hmm..

Sounds like a good diagnosis.

Maybe be a straight forward repair

I had an erratic needle with the electronic tach on my Harley once, along with a malfunctioning flasher control module, and some engine misfiring all at the same time. (let me say pretty a messed up action to have when your flying down the interstate) and I eventually traced it to a bad common ground wire under the dash.

For what its worth, On My 4720 I get this at start-up whenever it is sub-freezing (-5 to -20) or very icy out. Once it warms up, off and back on and it clears....

Did anyone resolve this Err 04 situation?

I’m getting this and am trying to check the
connections for the 325 Grn wire.

I’m finding some stuff in the svc manual,
but I haven’t started on the tractor yet.

First, can anyone tell me where the
A2 Electronic Drive Controller
is located on the tractor?

Second, did anyone having this Err 04
also have the alternator fail ???

Mine seems to not be charging the battery.

If anyone replies, much obliged.

In your case, it sounds like the alternator is at fault for both the ERR_4 and not charging the battery. I would remove and take to a local automotive electric shop to have it tested and rebuilt.
If your machine is an open station, the TCU computer is located in that panel below the steering wheel.

Wow, a reply, thanks!

I just went out and looked at the back
of the alternator, on the top connector,
I could see a green wire. I suppose this
is the 325 Grn which goes up to the
tach in the display.

I guess the red booted wire is where
you check the alternator, at the alternator.

I ordered an alternator already, it was
only getting battery voltage, at the battery,
so I figured whatever happened, the alternator
was pooched.

If you’re arlen from green tractor,
I always appreciated your commentary there,
nice to see you again.

fwiw:
Reading, searching, through the manual was
kind of interesting, it almost seems like the
start sequence is completely automatic, and
turning the key is just for show.

The alternator must make pulses, even if
it isn’t charging the battery, or it wouldn’t
start. I don’t really know.

I could not find the engine speed sensor,
and it seems like there really isn’t one.
It seems that the tachometer ‘system’
reads pulses, and calcs the engine rpm.

I could be way off. I was hoping to find a
sensor, and swap it and be done. !Lucky.
