JD 301A
Looking to buy a jd 301 A that has a good engine but when you let out on clutch engine dies due to something locked up in the rear end or power drive. Anybody seen this problem or can help?

It possible a tab is broken off end of shift shaft leaving trans in a gear as I've witnessed this happening a few time in the past. Does one gear shift lever feel looser than the other?

Sounds like your transmission is shifted into two gears at the same time along the lines Tx Jim suggests.
Removing the top cover is usually the only solution. In this way you can re align everything and also look for broken parts.
Sometimes the wear of the parts plus shifting when there is pressure on the gears as often occurs using a loader, causes one gear to slip back into position just as you are selecting another.
A dragging clutch can exacerbate this happening.

That's what I suspected. I was hoping the repairs could be made without splitting the tractor. I don't recall one shifter being easier than the other, just remember they shifted freely. The tractor is on a farm 5 hours away and I wanted to research a little before I make the drive to bring it home. Thank you both for your knowledge!

Maybe the set screw in a shifter fork became loose. One could inspect shift forks by removing rockshaft housing.

The left shift lever on my 2030 sometimes will "pop" up and allow two gears at once (the cover is worn and the snap ring will not stay put).

I can usually lift and reinsert the lever and get it to shift correctly, but sometimes it is so bound up I have to jack up a rear tire to release the internal pressure on the gears.

So see if the left lever will pull out. If so that's where the problem is.

I finally made it home with the JD 301A and checked the gear shift mechanism and all looks free and shifting freely. I have also removed the rock shaft housing and all gears are moving freely. I'm wondering if maybe the Main hyd pump may be locked up causing the problem? Feed back is appreciated!

If frt hyd pump was the problem engine wouldn't run with traction clutch engaged or disengaged. More than likely trans has one gear engaged all the time which could be a gear galled to a trans shaft when gear should actually rotate on shaft.

I cannot imagine a situation where a hydraulic pump could resist an engine's power without a shaft just shearing off.
I remain with the gear box being the problem.
If it is working now then adjust the clutch and continue to use it until it happens again.
Then carefully remove the rocker shaft cover and as you do so be observant for the tractor suddenly being free as if in neutral.
Sometimes just the removing of the shifter/rocker cover will allow the gears to free themselves.

Maybe seized brakes that are now free?

I asked about the main hyd pump meaning the unit inside the clutch/drive housing. With the tractor jacked up the wheels turn freely and I can shift freely through all the gears. That is why I was asking about the drive unit pump. If the gears was stuck will I be able to shift through gears and spin wheels freely?

If the transmission was in two gears at the same time you would not be able to shift gears.
The two gears at the same time situation can be a momentary problem that occasionally will correct itself with movement of the shift lever or depressing the clutch and turning the engine off.

With trans engaged in a gear it should be impossible for both rear wheels to rotate at the same time in the same direction unless traction clutch pedal is depressed.

This afternoon I removed the front end loader, before I tear it down I would like to pin point the problem. So I'm back in the transmission looking for obstruction or something out of place. Nothing yet!

Looking at the technical manual for this tractor I see the power shaft goes through the transmission pump, I guess this is what I was calling the Internal hyd pump. Is it likely for this to lock up causing my problem?

Does your 301A have a rear pto shaft? Trans pump is driven from shaft as you stated that would normally power the pto if no pto is on tractor so if trans pump was locked up this could be your problem.

Yes , it has a live pto. I have checked it by engaging the lever and it turns

free when disengaged. Today I will try and turn main clutch output shaft while clutch disengaged. I may end up back in the rear gear housing again.
Thanks

Does your tractor have continuous(dual stage clutch) or hyd ind pto(control lever between gearshift levers)??

It has the duel stage clutch with pto lever on left side of trans.

This morning I have removed the rock shaft housing and gear shifter cover. With tractor jacked up everything in transmission case seems to be free , but with the clutch disengage the power shaft will not rotate. I can get little movement with a pry bar , but isn't free.
