Frustration is setting in... 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there, mostly as Im in the barn doing the evening feeding chores. But... Better than nothing.

Chopped up the inner pipe inside the muffler. Not pretty but it HAS to change the sound somewhat. Whatever it is, it is.

I think I will tack the shell back on, put it all back on and 'sound check' it, then remove to finish welding and painting. I will cover the unwelded seams with foil tape for test purposes.

From homemade mufflers I have seen, they have partial plates inside the muffler that baffle and "restrict" the flow and force it back and forth from side to side. A good example was in one of the muffler sites I saw a couple of years ago. Flowmaster I think. That's just what I remember.

I've been following this thread, I need a quieter muffler on my 1020 with bottom exhaust. It needs to be round to fit under the left side platform. JD price is $267.21. I can burn a bunch of MIG wire for that price. Here's what I found by a quick google search of "what does a muffler look like inside". Lots of pictures=lots of ideas. Great fab work, dieselcrawler.

Thanks for the compliments and for tagging along...

I gave up on a 'test listen' and after tacking the shell in place, welded in all the seams. I plan to smooth up some of the welds, and paint every thing, hopefully this weekend if I can... Want it done.

Congratulations. You are far more patient than most of us would have been, certainly me. I would have long ago got out the plasma cutter and cut my initials in the muffler and called it good.

Me too Six. Greg has been extremely patient with this project. And we all appreciate his progress reports. Anxious to see it done!!! :)

To get off task for just a moment, have you done any mods or repairs to that your Ford 3910 FWD lately that you have pictures of? Any more on the muffler relocation or other things? That really is a great tractor.
If you start a separate thread, post a link so we can find it.

No I haven't. Used the snot out of it this past year. Sure took a lot of small task pressure off the Kubota. Now the Kubota only does FEL tasks and heavy pulling tasks. Last Winter I modified an old Meyer snow plow to fit on the FEL. Then added 3pt brackets to it and now use it on the back of the Ford. I hitched it to the Ford yesterday. If I remember,,,,, I'll try to get a pic when I'm at the farm today.

Sometime this Winter I need to rebuild the 3pt lift cylinder. Have you ever done that?? I'll start a thread when I do it. I've never had one apart.

I almost did it once but the dealer gave me a great price so I hired it out. It would be a snap for you. That is, assuming you took lots of pictures and started a separate thread on the repair. I've learned a lot from your repairs and the photos were excellent. The front bearing repair and tractor split for grease seal and clutch replacement should be required reading.

Do you have the links to both of those threads?

When I do the 3pt repair I'll link the other threads into that one. Thanks for the compliments Six.

I finally got things painted and put on the tractor last night. Aside from running it for less than a minute inside the barn, I have no idea if the sound has changed enough to suit me. Future testing required. I did find an exhaust leak I need to deal with at one of the slip joints I made.

Aside from that, and unrelated, I made up a set of rear tire chains, pieced together out of old semi truck chains I've picked up over the years. My OCD kicked in, and made me remove links from every cross bar so both sides match. (One side was 2 links wider than the other) That's alot of work.

If you don't have a chain tool it's aggravating work...

So are your chains now 2 link chains? Crossbar on every other link?

No chain tool, just hammer, cold chisel, bench vice, grinder and welder... what a pain in the @$$.

Nothing special, 3 open links between cross chains. Not bad for what it is. Better than nothing.

Had the tractor out to clean Horse stalls today... muffler mods helped the cackle a little, mostly tolerable noise level now... but an hour or two of brush hogging at WOT may tell another story. Will update as events happen.

This still surprises me. I thought adding pipe length would take care of some of the noise. But I also remember my teen years. You want a V-8 to sound cool?? Put the muffler as close to the engine as possible and then run pipes as long as possible. :)

   / JD 3005 exhaust mods/replacement #117
I think we need a video to get a good appreciation for the sound.

It still this that 4 cylinder glass pack 'brrrAAPPPppp' at certain RPMs under light to mid load.

I'm with holding further feelings of dismay until I get a chance to really work it hard, brush hogging, etc. The combo of long and small diameter pipe at the end of the run is likely a major part of the cause.

Brush hogged for about an hour this evening. The noise level is noticeable, but tolerable, for now. I'm going to just live with it, but may still add another 'muffler' towards the end of the last long straight sections. Having the end of the pipe less than 2' from my head, while pointed away, is still 'right there'!
