We have a JD 2010 and the PTO is giving us problems. When we engaged the PTO the tractor would bog down and quit. Then I guess it broke a shearpin and now it does not bog down but the PTO will not turn. What will this take to fix?? Also what is the extra hole under the PTO hook-up on this tractor? It does turn when you engage the PTO but the plug will not fit that hole.

I have a 1965 JD 2010. Not sure what would have caused your motor to bog down and die when engaging the pto. Sounds like you did break something. The other hole is the higher rpm hole. One hole is 540 rpm and the other is 1000 rpm I believe. I do not know what attachment is used at 1000 rpm and did not know that the other hole took a different size shaft.
Not many postings on the JD 2010 on TBN so if you do not get any help you may have some luck calling a JD repair shop. Once in a while you will run into one that is willing to offer helpful suggestions. If you do not have any luck e-mail me and I will give you the phone number of a Mid Michigan shop that may help you out with information.

You might try posting at www.ytmag.com in the john deere section. There are a lot of people there with knowledge on the 10 and 20 series JD's.

We have a 2010 and believe me, trying to get info or help on one is hard to do, at least locally anyways. The other website someone mentioned (yesterdaystractor.com) has been very helpful for the most part but from what I've learned so far is 1) get the manuals (owners, service, and parts), these are extremely helpful. 2) plan on findin and fixin your own problems. There's a lot of people who will help you online but nothing replaces doing it yourself and hopefully with a friend or somebody else. 3) be patient 4) celebrate when you've conquered one problem cuz' no doubt another will arise. 5) make sure you have something that will lift heavy stuff. 6) Be prepared to spend some money on parts, things can get a tad bit expensive.

As for your current problem, can't really say without knowing a little more about it but our problem was the "rollpin" inside the pto gear housing mechanism thingamajig. Took us 3 times to finally say "Oh, that must be it right there!"(another long story). We replaced that and everything was fine after that. Also the hole under the pto is as they said, another pto at 1000 rpm (1010 & 2010 have dual pto's, as well as some others I presume). My 540 pto shaft is reversible and it'll fit the 1000 rpm when turned around. I've read somewhere about some implements for the 1000 rpm but can't remember the right now. The boggin down I can only assume may be from a too heavy implement piece. Another thing I was told is you just can't throw any ol implement on the pto, it has to be compatible with your tractor. All in all though we like our 2010 despite a lot of other peoples opinions, it works for what we want it to do. Good luck and let me know if I can help. We are gainin some serious experience with our 2010 and as much fun as it is to drive it, it's pretty cool to work on it too.

Steve,
You are like me, when you see the words JD 2010 it sure catches your eye real quick. Great, we have another 2010 owner on board. Maybe some day there will be enough of us to come up with the answers real quick.
Did you get your alternator working right?
I search the Yesterdaytractor site once in a while but most of the time the answers are well hidden and I have yet to ask for help on the site but I am sure the day will come.
Like you, I really like my 2010.

Hey Farwell!

Good to see you keepin the eyes on the 2010's also. And it does give you a fuzzy feelin when you see someone else with one of these ol' masterpieces, hahaha! The alternator problem I think will be fixed when we get the last part in for the power steering/hydraulic oil fluid leak. It's already in place and ready to go. I feel pretty confident about it though, right now my worries are the steering wheel and remembering how to put it all back together, haha! If all goes well, we should be back to "bush hoggin" the rest of the acreage this weekend, then plowin some ground up for the wife, then pullin some fence up to expand our "front" yard, and the list goes on....

Hopefully ukfan won't get discouraged with the 2010, although there is that ol' saying..if it is one of the early models, you can't fix 'em, if it was one of the later models, you can't break 'em.

I wonder if that is a true saying?

It sounds like you have a problem in the rear pto housing. If the 1000 rpm socket is turning and the 540 is not, there has to be a pin sheared or teeth torn off of the gears. That rear housing is a gearbox all by itself that has its own oil. Most people assume the transmission oil is the same reservoir, but it is not. I have seen a few of these gearcases fail because the oil leaks out and there is no lubrication. The 2010 and 1010 actually have separate reservoirs for each final drive also. If you don't have an owners manual, I would suggest trying to find one since it shows the location of all the separate fill plugs and oil level plugs. Hopefully you can locate the parts you need. Some parts for these old models are getting scarce. Good Luck!
