I would presume it has a dipstick or a sight glass. Add a couple quarts and see where the level is at. Easy Peasy.
Far as oil goes, I don't have clue one about JD but if it's a gas motor instead of Diesel, any motor oil will do. If it's a diesel then I'd use 15-40 or 5-40 Rotella T6.

According to Tractor Data your engine takes 5.6 quarts of oil. There is a range of recommended viscosiites depending on temperature. Be sure your oil is diesel rated.

Zee best would be M1 0w30 ESP like I just put in the JD 2025R in place of the VW Castrol 5w30 that I'd been using. Next best (and less expensive) is 5w40 T6 someone else mentioned. Downhill from there. 15w40 is probably about the worst other than a plain 30w.
