2011 JD2520
My brand spanking new 2520 was delivered last night! She has .5 hours on her. I do have a VERY newbie question. I have searched the manual and google and still can't find the answer. Ok this is a little embarrassing, but... How do I make it go forward or reverse? I cranked it, made sure the parking brake was off, put it in Low and pressed the reverse pedal and nothing... same with forward. I am not sure I have it in gear... Seems like the gear lever only travels an inch or less when going from N to L or H... is this right? Is there a clutch to engage before selecting L or H? Since I had it shipped from out of state I got zero hand-on training (that's the downside of buying out of state). For the life of me, I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. It's torture seeing her sitting there, but not being able to do anything!

Man I feel for you ... gotta be a simple solution ... can't wait for the answer.

When you press the pedal, does the hydro whine loudly,? if so then it is in gear and the brakes are locked somehow, if it does not complain loudly, then the range selector is not in gear. I am not familiar with you model, but if it has a clutch push it in, and move that range selector smartly back and forth and end up in Low, I am thinking you are afraid to break it, and and are not being forceful enough,. When they are new, range selectors can be balky. you also might try if you have a bucket. trying to set the bucket edge down on the ground with a little pressure then "curl" a little which should make the tractor move just a tad backwards. "curl" or "dump" to jiggle the tractor a little foward and backwards. and trying the range selector while doing this. put some modest power behind the range selector lever and move the darn thing!

I bet this is the problem.. give it a try.

I will double check the parking brake again tomorrow... I have a JD LX172 riding mower I have had for years and the parking brake looks the same... big orange thing you pull out ... maybe the 2520 works different though even though it looks the same.

Well if it is the brakes, try stomping the service brakes hard with you foot, and see if the lever pops back up.. still again I dont know your model, but in general terms if you push on the hydro with the parking brake set, it will complain loudly, It may not move, but it is gonna let you know to get OFF! of that pedal with a loud whiney scream. But again if it does not do this then most likely the range selector not in gear. Possible linkage problem, or something else.

Well we need jinman or someone on here who actually owns a NH, Us Kubota guys are trying, but it would be good for a NH guy to comment

Good points... actually when I press the pedal it does not complain... does not lurch at all, so I am thinking that as someone said it is not in gear... when it's in "N" how far should the lever travel to be fully engaged in "L"? I was applying what seemed to be adequate pressure on the lever, and you're right, I stopped because I didn't want to break it. I know it's something simple because the delivery guy drove it off the truck and parked it in the garage for me before he left. I will have to wait til tomorrow to try again because it's parked in the garage at our new house... we are not living there yet and it's a few miles away. As you can tell this is my first tractor!

Is it April 1st already? The dealer didn't show you how to operate it? Mine did.

TNT- any gear lever I have ever moved- moved a few inches 2-4 at least. If your loader is up see if you can move it pushing on it? If so its not in a range-gear...

It's a JD 2520 and I ordered it from out of state, so no training. I am thinking it must not be in gear. I will try again tomorrow and report back. Thanks everyone.

Ok. looked over on the JD site, since it does not have a clutch, the range selector must be in N before it will start. so to the Original Poster, if you start the tractor and it starts, it is not in gear. and if you think it is in gear shut the engine off, and try to restart, if it starts, it was NOT in gear. make sure your foot is off of the hydro and the brake pedals, and push that range selector in gear. then go.

my 2520 was kinda hard to get in and out of gear when new . give it a firm hit with the heel of your hand it should go in gear .

Step on the forward reverse a little to get it spinning and pull gently on high / low handle and see if it go's in gear it might be but toothed and need some coaxing to get it in.

I have a 2720 that sometimes I have to step on the pedal while pushing/pulling the range selector to get it to drop into gear. Like Tom said, spin it up a little and try to shift.
