I have purchased two new Kubotas.

I have the dealer orders. I have the loan documents. Never does a tractor "year" appear.

There are hundreds of posts in the archive questioning compact tractor model years.
I have not read one post where the contributor could furnish a model year from tractor documents before them.

And what do I win if I can, Jeff?

For what it痴 worth my Kioti sales receipt has the year on it and it matches the serial number to every chart I have found. Some of my older machines did also. The myth about year doesn稚 matter for tractor sales has more to do with the used market and the erratic pricing due to condition and hours being more important than a specific year in most cases.. With this said offer me certain model years based on serial numbers and watch me run away with my money as I have a long list of years that parts are known to break and what year the redesigned part was fully in use on the new models.

My take on it is like everything else. It痴 your money and without there is no sale! So if having the correct year is important to you have them decipher the serial number for you, sign a statement with the year clearly defined or don稚 make the sale.

Stating the year doesn稚 matter because it痴 a tractor is just something many have been told to accept and that is wrong in my opinion.

Only problem with paying the same for the 2018 would be if they made changes to the 2019..

Sometimes the previous model is more desirable... less emission equipment... metal vs composite… etc...

True but there could also be improvements that someone might like on the newer model. Either way it's up to the buyer to research it.

Unless it痴 a totally new series, tractor and construction equipment manufacturers generally make running changes, rather than model year changes. In many, but not all cases, the running changes will coincide with holiday shutdown periods around Christmas or mid summer.

The tractor will have a tag with date of manufacture, along with the serial number, but that date doesn稚 tie into a particular model year in a legal sense.

Heavy trucks and other titled vehicles are a little different, but even there, model years don稚 necessarily coincide with calendar dates. Heavy trucks, for example, could have a given model year but an engine certified to an earlier standard if the engine was built in the prior year, to the old standards.

I am looking at possibly buying a used CTL. I asked the dealer what model year it was. He replied, as well he should, by giving me the equipment model and build date, with no reference to model year, since there isn稚 one.

Addendum: I happen to have the Deere CTL sales brochure that another dealer sent me sitting next to me. There is no mention of model year anywhere in the catalog. Just a Litho 18-04 (publication / revision date) for a current model CTL.

I understand the concept of 'year' not meaning much except for determining if the model has changed. I disagree with the statement that the 'year' "never appears ".

ALL of my documents have the model 'year' (2017) and the hours when delivered. The serial number plate on the tractor has the model year stamped on it. My insurance company wanted the 'year' and the 'value'. They don't care about hours.

When i just recently thought about trading the tractor, the first question from the dealer was "what year is it and how many hours?". They look up the value in the "tractor blue book" which lists them by manufacturers and by year.

'Year' doesn't have the same impact in the tractor world as it does in the automotive world, but to say it doesn't matter is a fallacy and is incorrect!

****, you were going to trade your LS? Getting something bigger or another brand. I looked at the LS partly based on some of your threads. Looks like a nice machine.

Jeff is 100% correct on this, tractors do not have model years but do have date of manufacture tags on the various components. If a buyer thinks/expects otherwise then he hasn't done his homework.

See the same complaint on a boating forum from time to time -- someone will buy a 2019 model year boat and notice that the engine manufacture tag says October 2018 and act like they got duped. Outboard motors don't have model years either. Boats do have model years (matters because they get hull ID numbers and vessel titles) but boat makers model years don't coincide with the calendar year. This particular brand started making 2019 boats in July 2018, so it wouldn't even be possible to rig the "2019" boat with a "2019 manufacture" motor for at least 5-6 months if not longer. Outboard manufacturers make motors on their own production schedule and then crate them for future use.
Auto manufacturers also start dating their model years several months early. One of the best times to buy a car is in late September/early October, if you don't mind missing out on the latest and newest gimmicks- er, features. Otherwise this thread is much ado about nothing.

BTW, my paperwork does show the model year; but I bought my tractor used, 3 years old with 179 hours on it.

I know of one situation where production dates matters, even if not model year.

On earlier 125s, it's necessary to remove one rear wheel to install or remove the three point hitch assembly. On later models, they incorporated a change to make that unnecessary. I don't know for sure where the break is, but mine has the old system.

Some tractor manufacturers are putting model years on the tractor. My Massey has a model year and it is also clearly written in the paperwork as model year 2019. I looked at Kioti and LS, they all had model years. Kubota did not have a model year that I could see. I understand that in the past the model year was the year the tractor was sold new. Some OEM's are going away from that, it still may be new, but the model year will be listed as say "2018".

Go to tractor data.com. Select your tractor. If there is a year record, you will find it on the general page, lower right. For example I selected international 806 and it gave the starting serial number for each year. I selected Kubota L5740 and it said serial numbers unknown. Manufacturers will have production dates in their system but may not publish it. When I purchased a Kubota L3710 the dealer wrote on the invoice a year but when I traded it in the next dealer said it had to be a year earlier because that’s when they stopped building them. To the dealer trading nothing made a difference in this tractor other than model and hours. On my next tractor, the L5740, there was a major update in the middle of production. I believe it was designated on the serial number plate as HDTC-3 with the -3 at the end being important. Different hydro, different PTO engagement, etc. So in general there is not a big difference, but sometimes that’s not at all true. Negative thinkers should always go in thinking I’m going to get screwed because that’s life.

I bought my M6040 in July, 2009. The date of manufacture was September, 2008. The warrantee began the day of purchase. None of my paperwork, which I still have, show a model year - just the model.

BFD....... My Rhino 950 rear blade was purchased in 2017 - assembled in 2015. Obviously stored under cover - no rust anywhere.

I have been told by salesman that the year that a new tractor was built, does not matter at the time of purchase.

I have found that the year a tractor was built seems to matter a lot to a salesman when you trade that tractor in.

when i bought my NH about 8 years ago from a private seller he wrote 2003 on the receipt. i was only concerned about the serial number. i assumed something in the serial number was code for the year but can't find any cross reference even in the NH shop manual.
messicks has 3 different year ranges in their parts section when looking for parts. i use 2003 and have always gotten the part that works. i always wonder though if the next part i order will work. i don't care what the year is apart from this reason.
from reading this thread i now realize i am not the only one that is unsure of their tractor year.

So, say you walked in today and bought a tractor. You tell the salesman you want a new xxxx model, front end loader, mid mount mower, however you want it set up. You go back and forth on numbers and eventually come to terms. You write him a check, sign the loan documents, however you pay for it. He says, we'll deliver it in 5 days.
Guy brings it out, unloads it, and looking at the numbers on the tractor and the paperwork, the tractor is a 2018 model.
It only has .8 hours, it's never been bought before, but it's last years model. It's new, i guess, but seems like a ****** thing to do. I think the dealer should have told the guy it would be a 2018 model, even though the 2018 and 2019 didn't change. This happened to a friend of a friend, i don't know him. My buddy told me about it. He was upset, but i guess didn't raise much ****, because he kept tractor.

Or, is this no big deal?

Just found this out myself on my new Kubota 1140 rtv. Some dealers were quoting around $700 less than others. Turns out those were 18's and not 19's. I went for the 19 still in the crate . No one said anything till I questioned the price difference... I agree, not really kosher...

I randomly chose a Kubota dealership and they do advertise the year model.
New Kubota L Series Models For Sale Pittsburg Tractor, Inc.

When I bought my L3301 in February of this year the tractor had been sitting on the lot since Oct of 2018. The salesman told me this when I asked.

My bill of sale does not show a model year for the tractor I bought. The ONLY reason it would matter is if the tractor I bought new had been sitting out on the lot over a year.

Messicks has a video explaining why year model doesn't matter like cars do.
