Is there a GOOD FIX for Dmax Tranny Cooler Lines

Chris, you have been kind enough to give me advice on the 2 6.0 Ford F250s I bought (an 04 & 06) so I see no reason to verbally attack your input or beliefs. That being said, as a consumer, it is hard for me to trust a manufacturer with a record of catastrophic engine problems, especially diesels. My 6.0s were trouble free, but the longest I kept one was 2 years. I hope Ford has it right this time, especially with the 5.0 and eco boost as they would fit my needs well. As for now, I will keep my Chevy.

Chris, if you'd just stop bashing GM at every oppotunity, we'd stop being prepared for your responses...I don't bash anything....I find it hard to believe that every GM you have ever seen has been garbage...I do see that you're somewhat backing off your DMAX that you have classified as an overall POS....Your are pumping BMW's now...I can tell you that my best friend has a German shop and his saying is.."If you can afford to buy it, you can afford to fix it"...Not point in quantifing the details...You will find out.

I never said every GM is a POS. I have had 4 personally. 2 were good and 2 junk.

I do not praise the BMW either. Its been to the shop already for a miss fire issue. Ended up being a bad plug at 40,000 miles and also has a bad mirror but I do suspect it got hit. Still, time will tell on it. Its the first used car I have bought in 11 years.

Chris, this has nothing to do with economics. It has to do with deficiencies in manufacturers products. I buy vehicles based on reliability, safety and price. The engine in my "bailed out" vehicle has been on the market now for 14 years with minimal issues (yes, I am aware of the oil consumption issue). Ford simply cannot match that. If it means buying a bail out truck to ensure my family and I will not be sidelined by a catastrophic engine failure, it is a no brainer for me. I also own a Ford, a 97 F150. It has been maintained according to the owner's manual religously and guess what, at 135k miles, needed a new engine. That is low miles by today's standards. Just a poor track record for reliable engines over the last decade and then some. I am sorry if it is upsetting to you, but it is fact. In my post, you went right for the fact I own a GM vehicle while dodging the other facts listed in my response that point out known factual issues with Ford.

At least aftermarket lines are available. I was crawling under our Chevy HHR and I see that both tranny cooler lines are leaking. GM lines are the only replacement available. Now I just have to figure out how to top off the "sealed" transmission.

Thats easy...

Drill a hole in the case in a convenient place and add fluid. The case is pot metal, so it drills easily.

Back a while ago, Chrysler was jobbing case casting out to a supplier so cheap that the castings were porus and transmission cases were blowing up.... Quality stuff.

Put a cork on the hole (after adding fluid). Problem solved.:thumbsup:

Not sure what you mean by this? His first T case that went at around 40K was making metal. Not sure why but it was discovered when he got stuck and tried to put it in 4 high and it would not engage. They thought it was just a shift solenoid or something like that they said fails from time to time. Anyway, that did not fix it and so they drained the fluid and it was full of metal.

I changed the fluid in the new one 20,000 miles after being replaced at 60,000 miles and all was fine. It just leaks bad at the rear output shaft seal. They have replaced that seal now 3 times in 46,000 miles.

The pump in the t case will rub and wear a hole in it. Eric Merchant merchantautomotive.com has a beefed up tcase cover and a better pump.

There was no hole, just lots of metal. I seen a sample of the fluid. Maybe it was wearing as you say and failed before a hole was made. It was all warranty work.

I wasn't crazy about GM taking bail out money either. But I've had good luck with their trucks and I'm not going to stop buying them just to make a political statement.

As far as brand loyalty goes if I thought Ford or Dodge had a truck that suited me more than my Duramax I'd buy it. But right now I don't think either of them have an engine/transmission combo that beats the Duramax/Allison.
