Is it really overheating?

I have been thru the same drill as you with my 1700 only to discover in the end that the temp sensor was bad. I have installed the gauge, had the radiator cleaned and rodded at a radiator shop too. I like having the peace of mind of the temp gauge too. I don't think the water pump is necessary. I can bushog all day long and the temp never gets above 190 unless the radiator screen gets clogged up. Which can happend quickly in tall grass. I run it hard 2400 rpms. The tractor seems to like it that way too.

If you are running the bush hog at 2400, you are putting a lot more pressure on the hog, than you are suppose to. It should be running more like 2200, so its at the right PTO speed for the hog. There is a red mark on the rpm gauge that tells you when you are running it at the right speed.

I run it a little shy of the red line. I thought the red line was 2400

If its a refurb it may have a meter showing the red 'pto' tic at 2400, but for a 1700 I think the tic should be at 2200 like prunty said. I've seen refurbs wih the wrong meter like this.

Have you checked your radiator fins for small debris?

My YM240 would run hot (230+ degrees) after 30 minutes of light cutting. Someone on the message board suggested I lightly blow compressed air through my radiator fins. When I did, dirt and grass came out of the radiator fins. Now my tractor never runs hot. I bushogged a tall 3 acre field the other day with a 5 ft cutter in 96 degree heat and never got above 210 degrees. Come to find out, the radiator screen to my tractor was missing. I made one out of an old window screen.

Just a thought.
