I've got a set of legs with casters that I'm planning on using. The existing 2" pipe legs are going to the scrap pile. I think the final dimensions are going to be 40x48.

Good idea, 2 inch soulds like it is way to thin for that heavy a table. (even more so once you get a few hundred # of steel piled on it)

They're 1/4" wall and probably more sturdy than the leg sets I'm going to use. This is going to be a light duty table. No dropping engine blocks or piling hundreds of pounds on it.

edit... pic sans casters. I'm guessing they're made of 16 ga.

Just X brace the legs, should be fine.

Whatever shape you decide on, I'd still leave a 1" gap between the pieces...
