Inexpensive diesel fuel tranfer tanks

I have a 20 gallon poly barrel that I use for transfer. I use my FEL to place it on a high shelf then use a jiggle siphon, with extra hose, to transfer the diesel. I have a shutoff on the hose. An initial problem I had with the jiggle was the natural curve in the hose which made starting the flow a bit difficult when the barrel was partially full. I added a tie-wrapped rod to the hose and now it works very well. I don't refuel that frequently so this setup works for me. The barrel was free and the jiggle about 8 dollars + -.

you could get an old fuel tank from a junk yard with the pump still in it then hook up a hose. wire it so you can hook power to your tractor

wow. Thats a great idea!
you could even grab the dash gage to show how much you have left.

My fuel station is a 105 gallon rectangular tank that I mounted swivel rollers on and a 12v 15 gpm Filrite pump. I power it with a standard sized battery (650 CCA) that I keep charged with a battery minder. The pump has a 15 micron filter installed on it, then a 25 foot hose with auto-shut off nozzle just like the service stations so I never spill any fuel. I have $350 invested in the tank, hose set up from a Craigslist post and $68 for the battery to power it +$10 for the battery charger. IT is worth the $78 for me not to have to raise the hood of the tractor each time I fill.

You could even simplify your set up more (and cheaper) by just getting a 12v power supply that plugs into the wall (assuming you have elec nearby). Just one of the regular wall plug ins that is rated for 12v and can handle the pump draw. Those things are available cheap from Surplus ctr, All electronics, Marlin Jones, etc Even new they aren't bad from Mouser or Digikey. Probably $20 tops.

Just another option for anyone looking for alternative power source options...

I'd be careful getting old steel tanks, may be full of rust , could cause a lot of tractor problems.

Great idea, plenty of plastic tanks around, but I can't think of a convenient way to get it to & from the station to refill it.
No handles & usually an awkward shape. Maybe worth building a cage of some sort? Truck tanks are usually more rectangular than car tanks.

A problem with the intank fuel pump from a vehicle is the rate of delivery. You won't get 5 GPM much less 15 GPM from a fil-rite pump. A 3/4 hose will siphon faster.

you are having probelms getting 5gpm from a fillrite?

I was comparing the in-tank pump to the fil-rite. My Fil-rite will fill 16 gallon tractor tank right quick.

ahh.. ok.. I use fillrites at work and have no problem getting volume out of them.. that's why i was wondering. :)

Soundguy ... Now if the OP could get a fuel tank & pump off a Boeing 747-100... then he'd be all set. Each engine at cruise will use about 17 GPM. Don't know electrical needs or delivered pressure though.

I wonder if the airplane fuel pumps are replaced on a schedule. Might be an opportunity there since failure filling a tractor isn't going to become a smoking pile of wreckage in a crater.

probably cheaper to just get a pump from northern. they have a knock off of a fillright for about 1/3 the price.

i was looking at rebuild kits as I had 3 fillrites to rebuild. say the other pumps at like 49$.. and the filrites starting at? 99-115$ depending on where you look..
